WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11,1995 SPORTS PRESS-REPUBLICAN PAGE 15 Knights beat B'town to keep title hopes alive By JOHN CORYER Staff Writer PLATTSBURGH - The Seton Catholic boys soccer team will need to jump over four teams in the last couple of weeks to capture the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference title. Knights' coach P.J. Gondek, following Tuesday night's 2-1 win over first-place Beekmantown, isn't ready to give up hope. \We're still looking at first place,\ Gondek said. \We put ourselves in a hole, but we are having a great second half, and the top teams are struggl- ing. There are still some big games to go.\ Ed Olabarrietta's second-half goal was the dif- ference as the Knights improved to 7-4-1 in the league. Saranac (8-2-2) is currently leading the pack, with Pittsburgh (8-2-1) and Beekmantown (8-3- 1) a point behind. Northern Adirondack (7-3-1) is also very much in the running. \We have Northern Adirondack on Thursday and we were hoping for a big week,\ Beekman- town coach Jon Chapman said. \But that's not going to happen now. \We haven't had many tight matches lately, and this experience will be good for us. We'll be ready for the NAC game.\ The Eagles opened the scoring at 14:00 of the opening half when Nick Fortunatus took a pass from Steve Tipton and went in on a breakaway before sliding the ball into the far side of the net. Seton, however, pulled into a 1-1 tie at 30:33 when Casper Callesen tallied on a long shot that found the net inside the far post. Saranac leaps into CVAC lead PERU — There's a new leader in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference boys soccer. Saranac took over first place Thursday after- noon by virtue of a 3-0 blanking of Peru. The Chiefs (8-2-2) got a first-half goal from Eric Lapier on a direct kick, and two second-half markers from Seth Myers and Bobby Brault. Cory Siskavich made 10 saves to record the shutout. \\ \Saranac leadsPlattsburgh\ High and Beekman- town by one point in the standings. PHS, howev- er, had a game in hand over the Chiefs. The score remained that way until 12:18 of the second half. Olabarrietta, after taking a pass from Callesen, made a nice move around an Eagle defender and slid the ball past Beekmantown netminder Ryan Constantine, who came out to defend on the play. The Eagles' best opportunity to get even came with five minutes left when Seton goalie Ross McGill deflected Corey Daniels' hard drive off the crossbar and over the net. \This was one of our better efforts of the season, and Ross played his best game in goal for us,\ Gondek said. \Eric Dubay did a nice job on Fortunatus, who is always a threat, and Josh Caldon was a tireless worker. \We're learing how to win. It just seemed that after we got the goal to put us ahead, we weren't going to be denied. But Beekmantown did have its chances to score. It was a good game.\ \Seton carried the play to us,\ Chapman said. \They were beating us to the 50-50 balls in the first half. \We got out of our passing game in the second half. But you can give Seton credit for doing that. We still have a shot at taking first place. We just need to improve in our next game, and take it one step at a time.\ McGill finished with 13 saves in the Seton nets, while Constantine recorded nine stops for the Eagles.
