WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER IV, 1995 PAGE 11 PRESSREPUBLICAN Herman hopes to turn former flop into hit By MATT WOLF Associoted Press Writer LONDON (AP) - It's the sec- ond week of rehearsals for the British premiere of the Broadway flop \Mack and Mabel,\ and com- poser Jerry Herman could not sound more pleased. \I'm so in love with this pro- duction,\ said Herman, 62, com- poser-lyricist of such tuneful Broadway, touchstones as \Mame \Hello Dolly!\ and \La Cage Aux Folles.\ \I adore 'Mack and Mabel,' \ he added, unable to resist playing favorites. \Shows become like children and no one would say, 'I like my daughter better than my son..' But I do have a special af- fection for this piece.\ So do British ice skaters Tor- vill and Dean, who used the over- ture from \Mack and Mabel\ to accompany a gold-medal- award-winning routine in 1982. In the years since, the show has acquired a cult status in Bri- tain that it never enjoyed in the United States, and an Angle- American consortium of pro- ducers is hoping for a healthy commercial run. Budgeted at $3.1 million, the new production stars Broadway performer Howard McGillin as Mack Sennett, the \king of com- edy\ whose silent movie heyday was in the 1920s. Inheriting Bernadette Peters' New York role is Australian singer Caroline O'Connor. She plays Mabel Normand, Sennett's leading lady on stage and off in the decade or so until her death in 1930. The show, directed by Paul Kerryson, opened a month-long tryout run Sept. 19 in the Midlands city of Leicester. - On Nov. 7, it opens at Lon- don's Piccadilly Theater as one of a busy season of musicals that includes a new show, \Jolson as well as revivals of Stephen Son- dheim's \A Little Night Music\ and \Company.\ The Broadway debut of \Mack and Mabel\ lasted a scant 65 per- formances, and fell midway be- tween two other Herman flops — \Dear World\ (1969) and \The Grand Tour\ (1979). Since then, the composer has had an international hit with \La Cage Aux Folles\ (1983), and continued success reviving \Hello Dolly!\. The latest incar- nation of \Dolly\ opens at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne The- ater on Oct. 19, with Carol Channing returning one final time to her Tony-winning role as Dolly Levi. Has \Mack and Mabel\ at last arrived? Its creators think perhaps it has. \Maybe in the '70s it was just the wrong time,\ said Kerryson, the director, who has made an annual specialty • of producing American musicals at the 752- seat Leicester Haymarket, where he is artistic director. \It's about a very interesting love affair between two quite firecracking people,\ said Ker- ryson. \And it's set at the start of something very big in the 20th century — communication on screen.\ McGillin said the role of Sen- nett was \an opportunity I could not pass up.\ \It doesn't happen often that you get offered this kind of role,\ said the actor, who was appear- ing on Broadway in \Kiss of the Spider Woman\ when the pro- spect came of heading the Lon- don production for six months. (McGillin has twice been nominated for a Tony Award — for \Anything Goes\ and \The Mystery of Edwin Drood.\) \I've always loved Jerry's music and thought someday it would be nice to sing, although I never had any idea how or in what show.'' Referring to the two principal male roles in \Dolly McGillin continued: \I'm a little too young for Horace, a little too old for Cornelius.\ Which means \about 40,\ which is all the actor will' say about his age. Michael Stewart's original libretto for the show had a downbeat feel. '\Mack and Mabel' makes gloomy stage music,\ read the Sunday New York Times headline to Walter Kerr's pan. \Our audience who had fallen in love with Mabel was not thrilled to hear about her death,\ recalled Herman, speaking by telephone early one morning from his hotel bedroom in Leicester. \This is not 'The Phantom of the Opera,' \ he said. \It's an old- fashioned entertainment.\ AP Photo Composer Jerry Herman (seated at piano) goes over music from \Mack and Mabel\ with stars Howard McGillin (left), Mabel Nomand and director Paul Kerryson. Sizemore happy with occasional walk on the wild side By OUANE DUDEK The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel The bigger they are, the more guarded they become. Maybe that's why Tom Marriott profiled PLATTSBURGH - This week, the Plattsburgh Business Tour Series will take a look at Marriott Food Service on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus. The cable series, sponsored and produced by the Office of the Mayor and Falcon Cable Televi- sion, features a walk-through of top Plattsburgh employers highlighting their people and manufacturing processes. The Marriott tour will air Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. on the Falcon Cable Community Access Channel. Marriott ^employs 150 local people in the preparation of 50,000 meals per week. Sizemore is still so quotably can- did, You may not know his name but his face is probably uncom- fortably familiar. Despite three juicy supporting roles — playing the sadistic detective in \Natural Born Killers,\ the gangster who hires Denzel Washington's character to do a little investigative work in the just released \Devil in a Blue Dress,\ and Ralph Fiennes' bud- dy in the upcoming \Strange Days\ — Sizemore remains a relatively small fish in the Hollywood shark pool. So he still dispenses his opi- nions quite freely and did so recently at the Toronto Interna- tional Film Festival. Sizemore, 32, is a Detroit native who graduated from Wayne State University in 1983 and earned a master's degree in theater from Temple University. Like many people\ he spent his\ teenage years \floundering. I lov- ed movies but it didn't seem like I could be in them. It was like saying, 'I want to go to the moon. Who's got a rocket?\' A girlfriend convinced him to try out for a high school play, \The Music Man.\ He landed the role of Harold Hill. \I had a good singing voice,\ he said. \That's how it started. I was hooked.I felt relieved I found something I wanted to do.\ Lately, he has begun \looking for parts that are interesting and multi-dimensional,\ like the mob power broker in \Devil.\ • SPIEDIE SHACK • HOHE OF 1HE HALF VAf>T> < \I thought he was symbolic.
