II 1? SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7,1995 SPORTS PRESS-REPUBLICAN PAGE 19 NCCS stays above water By MARK LAWRENCE Staff Writer MORRISONVILLE - By losing the pre-game coin toss, Northeastern Clinton won. The Cougars scored twice in the first five minutes and held on to claim a 2-1 victory against Saranac in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls Boccer action Friday afternoon. \We wanted to defend that (south) end in the first half,\ Northeastern coach Josie Gilroy said. \We wanted to deal with the water while we weren't tired. Also, we thought that end would get sloppier as the game went on and it looked like it might rain again.\ For much of the day, it look- ed as if the game would be wiped out due to the remnants of Hurricane Opal. However, the two schools couldn't find a makeup date. By gametime, the field at Morpisonville Elemen- tary School, which has a slight grade from the north end to the south end, had drained sur- prisingly well. The one excep- tion was that south end, espe- cially down the west, or spec- tator) sideline. \I don't know if I made a - good decision to defend that goal or not,\ Saranac* coach Mary LoTemplio said. \We didn't want it in the second half, but we were obviously pretty tight at the start of the game. Jessie (keeper Jessie Strack) also looked tight and a little worried about the water.\ As it turned out, Strack had good reason to worry. Seventy-three seconds into the contest, the ball squirted away from the keeper and right to. js[.Qrtheastexti_.wing_ JCaren Weierstall, who gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Three- and-a-half minutes later a cross pass from Ali Jennette found . Northeastern Clinton's Keri Misiaszek arrives a half step late. post for a 2-0 lead. \We discussed the puddles before the game /and what would happen to the ball if it hit them,\ Gilroy said. The goals were part of an opening 20 minutes that saw the Cougars keep Saranac bot- tled up in its defensive end. \The key was winning the ball at midfield: If you don't win the ball, jyou can't get it out of the zone arid go on tKe attack,\ LoTemplio said. \Both teams have very dangerous attackers. If you can't get the ball out of your end, those attackers are going to get too many chances.\ As the Chiefs grew used to the slop, they slowly drew even and the game developed into a thrust-counterthrust affair. The parrying continued through the first 20 minutes of the second half, capped by Heather Pellerin's goal at the 17 minute, 41 second mark. As with Nor- theastern's goals, Saranac's tally was aided by the wet grounds and puddles. This time, it was Morgan Weinbergs' cross pass that eluded Cougars' keeper Heather Snide. \I hoped that after we scored, we would turn it up to another level,\ LoTemplio said. \Unfor- tunately, Northeastern turned it up.\ Following Saranac's goal, the Cougars again bottled up the Chiefs in their defensive end. The last 20 minutes was a repeat of the game's first 20. Northeastern ended up out- shooting Saranac, 20-7. Cardinals unload on Buffalo State BUFFALO - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team wouldn't have minded saving some of its offensive production Friday for a day later. The Cardinals breezed to a 12-0 romp of Buffalo State in State University of New York Athletic Conference play, setting the stage for today's showdown with undefeated Fredonia. Plattsburgh improved to 5-1 in the SUNYAC and 9-1-1 overall. The loss dropped the Bengals to 2-4, 3-7. Reserve John Galli scored three goals and added an assist for Plattsburgh, while David Kim scored his first two goals as a Cardinal. Pete Cash, another reserve, had a goal and three assists. \We emptied the bench, but everybody played just as hard,\ Plattsburgh coach Chris Water- bury said. \We were focused — we didn't look beyond this game. It was nice to see David Kim score his first two goals, and Pete Cash also had a strong game.\ Rich King tallied two goals, while Paul Corbett, Tom Bedinotti, Kevin Riddleberger and Corey LaPoint scored a goal apiece for Plattsburgh, which had six goals in each half. \We were able to rest most of our starters for the entire second half,\ Waterbury said. \We came out an played a quality complete game, and I think Buffalo was feeling the effects of a long season.\ It will be a different type of game for the Cardinals today when they meet up with Fredonia. Fredonia defeated Potsdam, 5-0, Friday and brings a 5-0 con- ference mark and 13-0 overall re- cord into the game. Cardinal women avoid Devils' trap By JOHN CORYER Staff Writer PLATTSBURGH - It pretty much went according to plan for the Plattsburgh State women's soccer team Friday afternoon. The Cardinals, playing back- to-back State University of New York Athletic Conference games over -the weekend- at—the PSUC Fieldhouse, recorded an easy 3-0 win over Buffalo State. \It's always tough playing back-to-back games and we were able to rest some people today,\ Plattsburgh coach Karen Wiley said. Buffalo State brought a 1-4 conference mark and 1-9 overall record into the game. Fredonia, which is here today, is 1-3-1 in the SUNYAC, but 4-4-2 overall entering Friday's action. The Lady Bengals used an off- sides trap to try to slow down the Cardinals, who improved to 3-2-1 in the conference and 9-2-1 in all. \New Paltz did the same thing against us,\ Wiley said. \We were prepared for it. When you play an offsides trap, you live and die with it.\ Plattsburgh applied heavy pressure in the early going and had numerous scoring oppor- tunities from close range. The Cardinals were kept off the Scoreboard until 19 minutes, 5 seconds when Amy Scherer scored off a scramble in front of Buffalo State netminder Elizabeth Mahood. At 27:03, Michele Gully took a pass from Liz Kaminski and took the ball down the left side before beating Mahood with a high shot to the near corner of the net. \The Gully goal was a real nice one,\ Wiley said. \Everybody in the middle played well for us to- day, and we won the 50-50 balls. \We had a lot of opportunities earlier in the game that we didn't capitalize on. We weren't seeing the field like we should.\ The Cardinals closed out the scoring at 10:04 of the second half when\ leading scorer Karin Sherman tallied from the left side on a shot to the top shelf of the net. Amy Flick posted two saves in the first half in the Plattsburgh nets, while Erin Shaw made three stops in the second stanza. The Cardinals held a 27-5 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage on corner kicks. \The field was extremely wet and I was a little afraid that someone would get hurt in the second half,\ Wiley said. \We're taking one game at a time. We have a tough schedule. What we want to do now in to decrease our losses from last year.\ Counting today's game against Fredonia, the Cardinals have fives games left on the schedule. Notes: Sherman's goal gives her 27 points on the season. Darlene Leveille and Shannon Johnson share the Plattsburgh season point record with 28. Sherman now has 12 goals this year and needs three more to break Johnson's record of 14 in 1992. Sherman already owns ca- reer records for points and goals.
