C\'FRIDAY/0CT0BER6 1995 SPORTS PRESS-REPUBLICAN PAGE 19 Clinton CC women win, men lose PLATTSBURGH - There's only one part of the Clinton Community College offense that concern's coach Rachel Wilcox. It's that last part, where someone's supposed to put the ball in the net. For the second straight day, the Cougar women's soccer team clicked on nearly all cylinders, but had to sweat out a 1-0 vic- tory. Thursday, the victim was Canton. \It was just like yester- day's game,\ said Wilcox, whose squad knocked off North Country Wednesday. \We had a lot of oppor- tunities, but we couldn't finish them off.\ The Cougars dominated play and outshot Canton by a hefty 21-2 margin, but didn't break into the scor- ing column until 9:47 of the second half. Sarah Munn picked up a free ball in the penalty area, after a Clin- ton direct kick, and out of a crowd, blasted home the goal. Midfielders Brandy Thwaits and Sarah Han- field turned in superb per- formances for Clinton, 7-5. The Cougars travel to Hudson Valley Sunday. The hosts grabbed the lead 10 minutes in and went up 2-0 by the 25- minute mark. \We never got out of the gate. We came out flat,\ Clinton CC coach Eric Allen said. The Cougars (5-5 in Region III, 5-6 over all), averted a shutout when Jamie Wade scored unassisted 30 minutes into the second half. Wade gathered in the ball on the left side and beat one de- fender. Meconi paces Seton to win PLATTSBURGH - Jill Meconi scored two goals and Seton Catholic, playing its second game in as many days, recorded a 3-0 victory over Peru Thursday night in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls soccer. Meconi scored the only goal the Knights (4-4-2) would need when she took a pass from Amy Ryan and went in on a breakaway at 24:11 of the first half. Just over a minute later, Meconi gave Seton a 2-0 lead. Ryan closed out the scoring for the Knights with a second-half tally. Alison Sorrell was in goal for the shutout with eight saves. Something has to give in Saranac Lake ly TIM REYNOLDS Staff Writer On paper, it's about as close to a dream matchup as you can have. AuSable Valley visits Saranac Lake Saturday at 1:30 p.m., in an elimination game of sorts in the race for the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference Division II foot- ball championship. Both teams are 4-1. The game's meaning is simple: the winner controls its destiny, the loser will need plen- ty of help. Offensively, Saranac Lake has racked up 253 yards per game this season; AuSable's offense gains 233 yards on an average outing. Defensively, the Redskins again hold an extremely slim advantage, allowing 10 fewer yards per contest than AuSable does, 122 to 132. Throw in the fact the game is in Saranac Lake, and the Redskins seemingly have little working against them. But AuSable has the one key intangible — the desire to defend its Section VII Class C championship — on its side. And like the Redskins, Dan Hoey's club doesn't have a single glaring weakness that John Raymond and Co. on the opposite side- line could exploit. This could be, and should be, a classic. Something has to give — and the team that does probably won't be playing in November. In other games: Tonight Ticonderoga (3-2) at Seton Catholic (2-3), 7:30 p.m. Seton Catholic lost- its seven-year stran- glehold on citywide bragging rights Saturday with a 10-7 loss to Plattsburgh High, while Ticonderoga also was dealt a disappointing loss, 18-7 to AuSable Valley. If Ticonderoga is to keep its Division II championship hopes alive, it must win, espe- cially with Saranac Lake coming to town next Friday night. . Among Seton's final three games are mat- chups with Saranac Lake and AuSable Valley, so if the Knights are to have a winn- ing campaign, this game is practically a must-win. Beekmantown (1-4) at Moriah (3-2), 7:30 p.m. Moriah's situation is practically the same as AuSable's. A win tonight — coupled with a win next week at AuSable — keeps the Vikings alive in the Division II race. It's strength against strength tonight: Moriah's rushing game is the CVAC's four- th-best (159.6 ypg), while Beekmantown's run defense ranks third in the league (105.6 ypg)- Saturday Saranac (0-5) at Peru (5-0), 1:30 p.m. Peru, at the very least, can clinch a tie for the CVAC Division I championship with a victory over the Chiefs. If Plattsburgh loses at Tupper Lake Saturday, the Indians wrap up the crown with three games remaining. It's Peru's homecoming game, so look for emotions to run high. Plattsburgh (2-3) at Tupper Lake (1-4), 1:30 p.m. Another statistically-close matchup, with Plattsburgh's more-potent rushing attack being cancelled out by Tupper Lake's solid passing game. Nothing has been easy for the Lumber- jacks yet, and it doesn't get any easier after this game for Joe Cavallaro's squad — Tup- per Lake's last three games are against Peru, Moriah and Saranac Lake. Plattsburgh has a shot at finishing 5-4, but the Hornets will need to win this game to keep their chances of a winning season healthy. Northern Athletic Conference Saturday Franklin Academy (0-5) at Watertown (5-0), 1:30 p.m. The NAC's best team hosts the Huskies Saturday, intent on wrapping up the league championship. Winning the game obviously is unlikely for Franklin Academy, but Greg Marshall would like to see his club build momentum for Potsdamnext week. . Tonight, Massena (3-2) visits Ogdensburg (4-1). Saturday, Gouverneur (3-2) hosts Can- ton (2-3), and Potsdam (2-3) goqs to St. Lawrence (1-4). A Cardinal win would set up an all-important State Universi- of New York Athletic Con- ty ference showdowa-rSatur-day—forfehe Cardinals. weekend for us,\ Waterbury said. \Buffalo State (2-3, 3-6) could be as dangerous as anyone, and we're not taking them lightly. \Potsdam upset Cortland, and anything is possible. We want to play a good game and take it one game at a time. It's an eight-hour trip, and we want to get there early.\ Fredonia will be a major test againstundefeated Fredonia. The Blue Devils are currently ranked third in the nation and first in the state among Division HI teams with a 12-0 record. They are 4-0 within the con- ference. Chris Waterbury's Cardinals, meanwhile, are 4-1 in the con- ference (tied with Cortland) and have an 8-1-1 overall record. \This is obviously a big \They had a dominant team in the mid-1980's and are having a good run again,\ Waterbury said. \Their record is a little bit of a surprise, but they are big and strong, and good in the air. That worries me. \We do have some match-up problems with them. We're slightly more quicker, and it will a question of which team balances out their weaknesses. They are a very good team.\ Among Fredonia's wins are a 3-2 decision over Binghamton and a 2-0 victory over Geneseo. \We could afford a tie 'against Fredonia as far as the NCAA Tournament is concerned,\ Waterbury said. \But our chances of repeating as SUNYAC champion would be dimmed if we don't win the game. A tie - wouldn't help us either.\ The Cardinals are in good shape physically, except for the season-ending leg injury suffered by forward Matt Fyfe. Plattsburgh continues to get good scoring from its forwards. Tom Bedinotti leads the team with nine goals and nine assists for 27 points, and is followed by Chris Gondek (9-5-23) and Richie King (7-4-18). The Cards will play Buffalo State at 4 p.m. today, with will be at Fredonia at 2 p.m. Satur- day. Women at home Karen Wiley's Plattsburgh State women's squad will be looking to move up in the SUN- YAC standings with a couple of home games this weekend. The Cardinals (2-2-1, 8-2-1) oppose Buffalo State (1-4, 1-9) toxlay at 4-p.m. and play Fredonia (1-3, 4-4-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the PSUC Fieldhouse. An overtime loss at Oneonta last week all but took the Cardi- nals out of contention for the SUNYAC regular season crown. There are five teams ahead of the Cardinals in the standings, with Binghamton leading the way at 6-0. But Plattsburgh is enjoying a solid season at 8-2-1, and all games are important from here in for the Cardinals, who will be looking for a return trip to post- season play. Karin Sherman continues to lead Plattsburgh in scoring with 11 goate-and three-assists for 25 points, followed by Jaime Retefsdbrf (6-1-13) and Michele Gully (5-2-12). Sherman is closing in on three more school records. She is tied for career assists (16) with Melissa Joseph. 1000 FREE Minutes. Help Support Our Future Olympians Run. Pledge.
