Glens Falls road race to benefit Hall of Fame GLENS FALLS - The All Sport \Give Me 5\ Road Race, to benefit the New York State Basketball Hall of Fame, will be held Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. from the Glens Falls Civic Center. The race will offer runners a choice between a 5-kilometer (3.1 miles) or 5-mile race. The courses will follow the Hudson River. Registration fee is $12 with all proceeds to benefit the Hall of Fame. Placid's Smith sweeps go-kart races LAKE PLACID - Lake Placid's Tim Smith proved unbeatable in the stock light and stock heavy classes Saturday night as go-kart racing concluded a brief, but successful stand at Malone Rec Arena. Richard Moody, Saranac Lake, ran second in the stock-light main event with Pat Dupree, Onchiota, third. George Foley, Saranac Lake, was second in stock heavy and Malone\s Rick Honahan, third. On- tario's Kelly Michaud finished third, but was disqualified for not making weight. Pat Dupree remained perfect in the junior-restricted class with Derek Hilts, Malone, second, and Zach Amo, Ogdensburg, third. Mike Hall, Constable, and Riley Winch, Lake Placid, rounded out the top five. In junior sportsman, Michaud edged Hall by inches with Eric Tyo, third; Nicole Samarca, fourth; and Bradley Shova, fifth. There will be go-kart racing Sundays at 1 p.m. at the Route 58 Raceway in Fowler through October. The McDonald's Championship Trail Go-Kart Awards Banquet will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hotel Saranac. Race fans are invited. Tickets are required. Veteran racers Brian Ross and Mike Perrotte will be the guest speakers. Ross, a native of Saranac Lake, has more than 100 victories in 20 years of NASCAR racing. He finished third in the Daytona Interna- tional Speedway ARCA feature in a car owned by Winston Cup driver Kenny Schrader. Ross's 1995 Busch Grand National Chevy Lumina will be on display from 4-5 p.m. Sept. 30 in front of the hotel. Perrotte, a native of Morrisonville, is a former DIRT modified champion. Powerlifter Ford sets bobsled push record LAKE PLACID — Newcomer Krista Ford, a member of the U.S. powerlifting team, shattered the track record in the women's Na-, tional Push Championships Saturday in Lake Placid. The In- dianapolis resident pushed the sled across 50 meters of track in 5.92 seconds, bettering the old record of 6.39. \I didn't know what to expect when I came out here. I just wanted to do my best and see what happened,\ Ford said. Elena Primerano, Lyndhurst, N.J., also turned in an impressive performance, taking second place with only two days of push training to her credit. Primerano, a music teacher and former javelin standout at Rutgers, was discovered in August at a U.S. bobsled team tryouts in Warren, N.J. \I am very happy with everyone's performance. Everyone's push technique improved from last year,\ said U.S. Women's Bobsled Team coach Steve Maiorca. \And I'm ecstatic wit the newcomers. They showed great potential.\ Liz Parr Smestad was third in 6.35 seconds, followed by Alex Powe-Allred, 6.41; Amy Bowyer, 6.43; Michelle Powe, 6.46; Laurie Millett, 6.52; Christine Spezio, 6.58. Frechette team wins Sadie Hawkins golf tourney PERU — Judy Frechette, Bruce Frechette, Ron Miller and Jay LePage combined for a gross score of 62 to win the Sadie Hawkins Tournament Sunday at the Adirondack Gojf & Country Club. Patti McLean, Stan Loya, Jerry McGee and Paul Spear were sec- ond with a gross score of 64 while Karen Wiley, John Coryer, Jim Ryan and Randy Blair were third with a 64. D'Lano foursome wins Budweiser tournament PERU — Al D'Lano, Dick Doin, Bill Meconi and Gil Burnell team- ed for a 60 to win the Fourth-Annual Budweiser Tournament Friday at Adirondack Golf & Country Club. Martin wins mountain bike races TUPPER LAKE - William Martin, of the Viking Ski 'N' Cycle, finished first in the expert class in the cross-country race and also posted the fastest time in the hill<-clinib trial during the Back-to- School Scramble Sunday at Big Tupper. The Black Fly Mountain Bike Club sponsored the event. TUPPER LAKE - A group of area runners will go the distance next weekend to promote the community effort behind the proposed Tupper Lake athletic field.' The 15 to 20 local runners from the Tupper Lake area will embark on a 372-mile run at midnight Saturday from Em- maus, Pa., home of Rodale Press, which publishes several well- known international magazines, including Runner's World. The running publication has offered to provide coverage of the benefit run. The group is scheduled to ar- rive at the site of the proposed athletic field in Tupper Lake by 2:30 p.m. Monday. \This run is to highlight the ef- fort put forth by the Tupper Lake Rotary Club, the contractors, the volunteers and the community toward the completion of the athletic field,\ said Jim LaValley, President of the Tupper Lake running club. \As a group of runners, we felt the fund-raising message needed to go out to a larger audience, and with the help of the staff at Runner's World we are en- couraged that a magazine of this caliber with help us do that.\ The athletic field has been under construction for the past year with local contractors yolun- Raautta C row-country Expart 1. The Rotary Club of Tupper Lake recently held a fellowship dinner that featured guest speaker Dick MacPherson. All of the proceeds went toward the construction of the new track and field, and the community is now within $90,000 of their overall goal. The run from Emmaus will continue around the clock and travel through such cities as Hazelton, Pa., Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Binghamton and Utica.
