LAKE PLACID - They have always been on the same team; him coaching, her skiing. Courtney Strait is a freshman at National Sports Academy, one of four girls on NSA's boys soccer team; Mark Richards is Wells' boys soccer coach. She is 14, a New York state high school champion as both a seventh- and eighth-grader; he was one of her skiing coaches. When Wells visits NSA in a Moun- tain and Valley Athletic Conference Southern Division matchup today at 4:15 p.m, the pair will be on the same sideline — only on different benches. Saying the match will be awkward for the two is putting it mildly. For the past four years or so, the. relationship between Richards arid Strait has quickly progressed from coach-athlete to friends to practically family. They even exchange gifts for birthdays and holidays. \Court and I are closer than friends,\ Richards said. \She means an incredible amount to me. Outside of my family, I don't think there's any- body I care about as much as her.\ \He's much more than a coach,\ Strait said. \He's much more than a big brother. He's like a second father to me, just acting like a big brother.\ Strait transferred to NSA this fall, after a tremendous high school career at Shen — although she was only in junior high. Skiing is her sport, un- questionably, but soccer stands a close second. \I play it here just to keep up on my skills,\ Strait said. Richards knows the potential she has as a skier — he's only half-kidding when he says he'll be with her at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake Ci- ty. And knowing exactly what kind of calibre skier she is, the omnipresent potential for injury in soccer will make watching today's match that much harder for him. \I know the future she has in front of her,\ Richards said. \I would be sick, literally sick, if she was to get hurt playing against my team in something that really doesn't matter all that much to her.\ Strait, too, is only half-kidding when she asks for leniency. \I hope his players take it easy on me,\ she said. Although they're both uneasy about going against one another, they are looking forward to the match, if foT no other reason than seeing each other once again. \It goes way beyond racing,\ Richards said. \I've told her 'no matter where you go, I'll be there with you.'\ The bond is there, it is genuine, and it is irreplaceable. \Hopefully I'll be able to show him something,\ Strait said. It seems she already has. Rutgers' offense big concern of Syracuse NAC, Keene boys win big By WILLIAM KATES AP Sports Writer SYRACUSE - The way Syra- cuse coach Paul Pasqualoni fig- ures, even if Rutgers' starting quarterback Ray Lucas misses Saturday's game with a hand injury, Syracuse still has its work cut out against the Scarlet Knights' Big East-leading of- fense. • Lucas, a three-year starter, suffered a laceration oh his non- throwing hand on Saturday in the first quarter during Rutgers' 59-34 loss to Penn State. His backup, senior Robert Higgins, came off the bench to complete 22-of-38 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns against the sixth-ranked Nittany Lions defense. On Monday, Rutgers coach Doug Graber said Lucas' status for Saturday's game in New Brunswick, N.J., was uncertain. \The quarterback situation is up in the air,\ Graber said. \Raymond has stitches in his left hand and a badly bruised, left hand. His left hand is just , a mess. We are really not sure and probably won't know until later in the week exactly what our sit- uation is at quarterback, arid may not even know until game time.\ The way Higgins played Cardinals lose to St Michael's PLATTSBURGH - Melissa Zwick, Kelley Carroll and Sarah Dieck produced the three points in Plattsburgh State's 6-3 loss to St. Michael's in women's tennis action. Klpp-Rudy, 9-7. against Penn State, Pasqualoni said it really does not matter which quarterback runs the Scarlet Knight offense, which is averaging 462.7 yards a game. \Robert Higgins comes into a very tough game against Penn State and scores 34 points. It was quite impressive,\ Pasqualoni said. Pasqualoni noted that Higgins ran the first-team offense every snap during spring practice while Lucas — who threw for 1,869 yards and a school record 16 touchdowns in 1994 — was re- covering from surgery on his throwing shoulder. \The word in the off-season coming out of New Jersey was that this Robert Higgins kid can play for a lot of teams in the Big East and be a starter. So you have to consider him to be a starter,\ the Syracuse coach said. \I would not consider him to be an inexperienced young guy who doesn't know what it is all about. We are talking about a senior who is a very good player. Whichever quarterback plays, you have your hands full,\ he said. Higgins completed 26-of-48 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns as Lucas' backup last season. He started against Army when Lucas was sidelined with an ailing shoulder and com- pleted 12-of-19 passes for 139 yards and a pair of touchdowns in a 16-14 Rutgers' win. Even minus Lucas, the Scarlet Knights still have an explosive offense. SAVE COLD GASH LATED DOORS We'll b&'heiaririg up the North Gbuntry -!xl I _ I .
