PAGE A-6 SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24,1995 \p. PRESS-REPUBLICAN PLATTSBURGH,N.Y. Pataki digs for his Hungarian roots BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) - New York's 53rd governor, George Pataki, arrived in Hungary Saturday for a five-day stay in the country of his paternal grandparents, his first overseas trip since his election. \It is wonderful to be here and I look for- ward to visiting the place my grandparents came from,\ Pataki told reporters. His first visit was with Hungarian Foreign Minister Laszio Kovacs, who had invited the governor, but who was about to leave for New York to attend the United Nations gen- eral assembly. They discussed ways of expanding ties be- tween their respective chambers of com- merce, and helping Hungary attain a greater business presence overseas, with New York serving as the commercial gateway to the continent. When Pataki left the foreign ministry, he loosened his tie, took off his jacket, slung it over his-shoulder and went for a walk along the Danube embankment in the morning sun before departing for the eastern provinces. To escape poverty, Pataki's grandfather, Janos (John), emigrated to the U.S. in 1906. He left Aranyosapati, a small village 150 miles east of Budapest on the banks of the Tisza River, and ended up in Peekskill, New York. His wife, nee Erzsebet (Elizabeth) Szanics, and first son, Janos Jr., joined him in 1908. They had four more children in the. U.S., among them Louis, the governor's father. Accompanied by his wife, mother and son Teddy, as well as aides, Gov. Pataki faces a grueling schedule not unlike an election campaign. As a \local boy who made good,\ he will have meetings with Hungary's president, prime minister and other public officials, and attend a host of meetings at every stop. On Sunday, the governor will meet the •' '. ' ' . AP Photo Gov. George Pataki (left) gestures while being received by Hungarian Foreign Minister Laszio Kovacs in the Foreign Ministry Saturday. At center is U.S. Ambassador to Hungary Donald M. Blihken. mayor of Nyirbator, Ferenc Petroczki. They have met before in New York. Petroczki's staff found Janos Pataki's 1905 passport application, which he used to emigrate to the U.S., and a copy will be pre- sented to the governor. The emotional highlight of the trip will be later Sunday when the governor visits Aranyosapati. \We searched the area for the governor's relatives and he will get to meet two of his cousins, Mrs. Istvan Papp, on the Szanics side, and Mr. Jozsef Pataki, 84, both living in Aranyosapati,\ Petroczki said. Trio convicted in Queens kidnap-torture NEW YORK (AP) — Three Fukianese gangsters have been con- victed of kidnapping and torturing a pair of immigrant businessmen in an effort to collect a $60,000 ransom, the Queens district attorney said Saturday. The trio was found guilty of kidnapping the two men at gunpoint in July 1994, forcing them to strip to their underwear, and holding them hostage for nearly 34. hours in a Queens apartment, said District Attorney Richard Brown. While in the apartment, the abductors beat the men and repeatedly threatened to kill them or cut off their fingers, Brown said. Convicted late Friday were Chen Xiao Liu, 28; Jun Jie Ke, 30; and Shau Chan, 29, all of Queens. They each face 50 years to life at their Oct. 25 sentencing in state Supreme Court. Police car, postal truck collide NEW YORK (AP) — A police car responding to a report of shots fired was broadsided early Saturday in Manhattan, ejecting one of tiie officers from his badly damaged vehicle, police said. Both officers in the car and the truck driver were all taken to St. Vincent's Hospi- tal following the 9:40 a.m. accident at the intersection of West 30th Street and 11th Avenue, said a police spokesman, Detective Dwight Cunningham. The officer in the patrol car's passenger seat was thrown from the vehicle on impact, and was listed in serious condi- tion, Cunningham said. The police car's\ driver was in stable condi- tion, while the driver of the postal truck was in good condition. The names of the victims were not released. Cunningham said the police car had its lights and siren on when the crash occurred. Poor penmanship is ticket to freedom By HOLLY CORYELL Associated Press Writer •ALBANY, N,Y. (AP) - Want to get out of a parking ticket? Hope the meter maid failed pen- manship. Motorists across New York state will no longer have to pay parking tickets that are in- complete or illegible under a new state law that takes effect on Sunday. The law says a ticket must be dismissed on appeal if certain in- formation is omitted, described incorrectly or if the writing is unreadable. State Assemblyman Daniel Feldrrian and state Sen. Guy Velella, the two authors of the law, say requiring such precision will ensure that parking tickets are handled fairly. \Tickets must now be written with sufficient clarity and detail so as to identify the proper of- fender,\ Feldman said. \Motorists will now be spared the financial headache of having to dig into their pockets and pay for wrongfully issued tickets.\ Filling out a proper parking ticket may not be so easy. Under the law, parking sum- monses must include the vehi- cle's designation, plate type, reg- istration expiration date, make or model and body type. The ticket must also state the charged violation — including a reference to the applicable rule or provision of law — the days and hours the rule or law is in ef- fect, the date* time and place where the alleged violation oc- curred, and the meter number, where appropriate. Search continues for 7-year-old KINGSTON, N.Y. (AP) - Police are focusing on a single kidnapping suspect as the search for a missing 7-year-old girl con- tinues. Meanwhile, neighbors and local businesses are banding together to offer a reward for in- formation leading to Rickel Knox's return. Rickel vanished from the street in front of her Kingston home Thursday where she had just removed her rollerblades, according to Kingston Police. A downstairs neighbor, who was babysitting Rickel, stepped inside to speak to his roommate shortly before 5 p.m. When he came outside minutes later the girl was gone, police said. Sources close to the investiga- tion told the Middletown TSmes-Herald Record that the suspect was a local man who of- fered to take a polygraph test, tiien later refused. The suspect had been seen in Kingston Point Park about the time the girl disappeared, the Record reported. Searchers combed the park Friday and Saturday but found nothing. A United States Coast Guard Cutter used an inflatable raft to search an area along the Hudson River shoreline but also came up empty. FBI agents have joined the investigation. Laser Cut Borders!
