Elizabeth Taylor sees Burton grave CELIGNY, Switzerland (UPI) — A weeping Elizabeth Taylor, shielded from photographers by umbrellas, visited the grave of twice-wed husband Richard Bur- ton for the first time Monday in the tiny Lake Geneva village of Celigny. Taylor, who attempted to visit the grave Sunday but left after a fight with photographers, drove to the cemetery at 6 a.m. local time Monday. 30 \tinutps b^forff sunrise. Standing behind a screen of four multicolored umbrellas held by private security guards and personal assistants, Taylor wept as she stood by the grave for 15 minutes. \Although she was hidden by the umbrellas, we could clearly hear her weeping,\ said Alain Morvan, one of six photographers at the grave. Some had camped out at the cemetery since Burton's funeral last Thursday in anticipation of her visit. When she left, one of her security guards threw a handful of stones and earth at the photographers. Taylor was then reportedly driven to her chalet in the fashionable resort of Gstaad. Burton, who was nominated for seven Oscars but never won, died Aug. 5 at age 58 from a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Taylor, whose two stormy marriages to Burton often overshadowed their acting careers, did not attend the funeral at he request of the ac- tor's widow, the former Sally Hay. Taylor was married to Burton from 1964 to 1974 and again for less than one year in 1975. They remained friends until his death and teamed up last year on Broadway for a revival of \Private Lives.\ The Welsh-born actor, married a total of five times, once called Taylor the only woman he ever truly loved. Taylor flew to Switzerland from the United States on Sun- day, taking a commercial flight to London and continuing to Geneva aboard a leased ex- ecutive jet. She drove at once to Celigny, which has a population of 601 and Elizabeth Taylor where Burton bought a hoiise in 1959. Taylor and her retinue walked the half mile from the heart of the village .to the graves ite. She first went to Celigny's new cemetery, located several hun- dred yards from the old graveyard where Burton is buried. It was unclear whether it was a mistake or an attempt to lure photographers out of the old graveyard. Pipe bomb suspect pleads innocent ST. CLOUD. Minn. (UPI) - Earl Steven Karr, suspected in a rash of pipe bomb incidents throughout the Midwest, pleaded innocent by reason of mental il- lness Monday and said he does not understand why he is under \attack.\ \We've got records going back to when Earl was 8 years old and basically those records show he was suffering from some type of mental illness,\ said Dan Eller, Karr's court-appointed attorney. Karr, 24, entered his plea in Stearns County District Court, where he faces charges stemm- ing from six bombs dismantled in late May by police in St. Cloud. He is believed responsible for more than 20 pipe bombs planted in Chicago. St. Cloud and S t i 11 w at er, Minn., and MHwaukee, LaCrosse and Eau Claire in Wisconsin. The charges are \very scary and threatening. I'm panicking and all that.\ Karr said after entering his plea. \It's very hard to cope with such an attack and I don't understand why.** Judge Paul Hoffman granted prosecutor Thomas Heffelf- inger's motion to send Karr to St. Peter State Hospital for psychiatric examinations that could take up to 60 days. The tests are expected to begin in about two weeks. Karr said he will \feel more at home\ at the hospital, apparent- ly referring to his stays in mental hospitals in Texas last year and during his childhood in Chicago. The jury must decide two ques- tions — whether Karr is guilty of placing the bombs and whether he was too ill to know what he was doing. Eller said it will be harder to succeed with the mental illness plea because authorities dropped a 21-count federal indictment in favor of state charges. Pro- secutors said they made the move because it is more difficult to prove mental illness in state court, where the burden of proof shifts from the prosecution to the defense. New law tougher with youngxlrinkers ALBANY, N.Y. (UPI) - Gov. Mario Cuomo signed a law Mon- day aimed at cracking down even harder on people under 21 who drink and drive. The governor also approved legislation to bolster employ- ment programs for welfare reci- pients. The new statute dealing with drunken drivers mandates license revocation for a person less than 19 convicted of driving while his ability is impaired by alcohol or drugs. For drivers under 21 but more than 19, the law mandates license revocation for a second convic- tion for an alcohol or drug- impaired driving offense. For people under 19, no new driving license could be issued for one year or until the offender reaches 19, whichever is the longer period. For second of- fenders under 21, no new driving license could be issued for at least a year or until the offender reaches 21. Successful completion of an alcohol rehabilitation program won't be enough for offenders to get their licenses back. Turn your New Blueberry Bfewtonar Fruit Chewy Cookies. NEW*. Press-Republican—Tuesday, August 14,1984 9 Hatfield admits error in judgment PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) - Sen. Mark Hatfield, R-Ore., and his wife revealed Monday she received $55,000 — more than previously disclosed — from a Greek financier. But the embattl- ed senator swore \before God almighty, neither one of us have done anything unethical or il- legal. 11 Hatfield, 62, is under investiga- tion by both the FBI and the Senate Ethics Committee to determine whether he sold his in- fluence to Greek businessman Basil Tsakos to try to win U.S. support for a trans-Africa oil pipeline. \I have made an error in judg- ment/' Hatfield told a news con- ference, adding that in retrospect, \I probably would —* in fact I know I would — do things differently. Hatfield's wife, Antoinette, standing next to her husband, told reporters she had received $55,000 — not $40,000 as previous- ly disclosed — from Tsakos for helping the Greek with real estate matters unrelated to the pipeline project. She said a review of her books last week turned up the $55,000 figure. \I earned all the fees I was paid,\ Mrs. Hatfield said of her real estate and decorating advice to Tsakos and his wife. \I am proud of the quality of the advice and service I offered.\ — - Despite this, the Hatfields said they gave $55,000 Monday to charity, specifically, the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children in Portland. In defending his support of the proposed pipeline, Hatfield in- sisted there was no conflict of in- terest. \In no way was! entdoxsiug. Mr. Tsakos,\ he said. \I was on- ly promoting the idea of a pipeline to extract the oil from the Persian Gulf and prevent a nuclear holocaust. \I swear before God almighty, neither one of us have done anything urteThical or illegal/* Hatfield said. \My insensitivity to the appearance of impropriety was a mistake.\ «*«•\** Buy one blouse at 10%off save c *• • 20% off on second blouse. • Choose from our entire stock of reg. priced: • Oxfords, men's tie shirts, oversized looks, georgettes, other dressy styles and lots more* • Sizes 5 to 13 and S.M.L # 20% off lower priced items • H wfnene trie nicest dotries hang out barbara mum Use our lay-Away Pton.Bortxno Moss charge Ameocan Express Vrsa Of MasterCard Sale at all Barbara Moss stores use our Moss c**arge American E*c*ess v<$a ex
