The stock market was showing a slight upward inclination when Press Secretary Powell said that President Jimmy Carter would not attempt to determine an exact pro- per level for profits. It added to the gain thereafter. Some analysts had attributed Tuesday's market downturn, in part, to remarks by government officials yesterday about the high level of corporate profits. In other news, a top Energy Department official told Congress that he expects OPEC's pricing con- siderations at its March 26 meeting will \follow the market\ but that prices won't be based on the world spot market prices for crude oil, which tends to be above listed quotations. He said most of the profits as a result of higher oil prices have gone to the exporting countries. Meanwhile, the Treasury Depart- ment issued a study which concluded that increasing dependence on oil imports by the Local Stocks Courtesy First Albany Corp.. In a significant ruling in this labor contract year, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that states may allow striking workers to collect unemployment benefits. This upheld a New York State law and was a blow to several units of American Telephone & Telegraph. A total of some 885 issues closed higher while some 525 fell. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which had over a two-point loss in the first half hour of the day, closed at 857.76, up 7.45 points. Trading was active for the most part, with volume totaling about 31,180,000 shares up from* about 27,180.000 Tuesday. There was a sizable increase in block activity compared to Tuesday. The late advance brought glamor and blue chip issues to the fore. Stocks in the aerospace, chemical* computer, drug and motion picture groups gained. Motors were strong. Oil issues fell. Steels and tobaccos were mixed. Among the gainers, Boeing was 65, up 1%; Du Pont 138%. up 2V 4 ; IBM 3151/4, up 4%; Burroughs 69Vz. up l^i; NCR 67Vi. up IV* and Disney 38, up 11/4. GM paced the auto group with a gain of % to 57Vs. In publishing, MacMillao was up 7 /g to 13V«. Other gainers included Minnesota Mining 58, up 1 H; EG&G Inc. 29V4. up lVs and Teledyne 122V 4 . up 2%. Casino issues participated in the gain also. Bally was 66Vx, up Ceasars World 60tt. up 2%. Playboy 241/4 up 1V4 and Dei E. Webb 23tt, up Eastman Kodak, which is in- troducing several new cameras and a new color instant film, was-&4%, up 2. Its competitor, Polaroid, which didn't have any comment on the Kodak plans, ended at 40%, up K. Gerber Products was off % to 28y 4 . It said it had had preliminary talks with CW Transport to explore the possibility of a combination of the two companies. On the Amex, CW Transport was 25%, off 1W. Monogram Industries was 33*4, up 2V%. It plans a debenture ex- change offer for a substantial por- tion of its common stock. Dome Mines was 89Vi, up 2. It too reported sharply higher year profit. Tuesday, it announced plans for a 3- for-1 split. Short interest on the New York Stock Exchange rose 3,818,369 shares in the month ended March 15 to 39,926.953 shares. Prices also closed higher on the American Stock Exchange with the market-value index up 1.08 points to 174.10. The average price per share rose 9 cents. Advancing shares outnumbered decliners 302 to 259 with 258 shares unchanged. Volume Wednesday was 4,596,380, compared with 3,540,000 Tuesday. The most active issue, orading 402,700 shares, was Allied Artist In- dustries, which closed up 1V4 to 3%.
