(UPI) - Ah, spring — when the bird's on the wing, the flowers are in bloom and the disc jockey's on the front lawn. Displaying a genuine case of spring fever, the staff of WGY, a 50.00-watt station of General Electric Broadcasting Co., Wednesday decided to do the entire day's broadcast from the fro t lawn of the large radio-tv complex. Among the noteworthy events: one driver ran off the road while driving by slowly and watching the performance; one ran out of gas across the street; another had a flat tire, sending a hubcap spinning toward the announcers; and a kindergarten class, en masse, read an ode to the season. . The idea, a^first for the 57year-old station, was formulated by Pro- Love Canal danger of poison spredds WASHINGTON (UPI) - A chemical dumping site that \may be the most perilous yet discovered\ has been located in Niagara Falls, NY., the city already shocked by the Love Canal disaster. Rep. Albert Gore. D- Tenn., said Wednesday. Gore said pesticide waste from the site has drained into Bloody Run Creek and almost certainly is the source of Lake Ontario contamination. The area, called Hyde Park, contains four times as much waste as the Love Canal site, where dozens of persons fled their homes when buried chemicals seeped through basement walls and oozed up on lawns. Gore told a House hearing. gram Director Michael Neff. \It was about 38 degrees when I got out there at 5:30 a.m..\ said morning annou cer George L. Davis. But it. wasn't lonely for long. One woman who lives nearby drove by in a etation wagon with a large banner on the side reading Good morning George L ' and a school bus passed with a sign in the window. One guy even drove in with some Danish pastry for us.\ Davis said all the day's music had been planned in advance and the records and commercials were be- ing played by engineer-announcer Jim Leonard inside the station. Neff sat alongside the an- nouncers, directing the operations and calling in directions to the engineer on a phone. The men sat at a table with a microphone and a clock, and were under the cover of a large yellow tent, just in case Mother Nature fail- ed to cooperate. The precautions were unnecessary, howeger. and midday temperatures rose to the 50s under sunny skies. Davis was followed by veteran dj Harry Downie from 9 to noon. A mid-day talk show was done inside the station and afternoon host TQOM McCarthy resumed the out- side duties from 2 to 6 p\ m. \It's a kind of tough place to stop right along Balltown Road, but some people have stopped and chat- ted.\ said newsman Jack Aernecke. He ebplained that a couple of newscasts, too, were done from the \fresh air studio\ but that* 1 most were handled inside. \A lot of people are just driving by slowly and honking their horns.\ Aernecke said Randy Bongarten. the station- manager, said, \One teacher from the Brown School called us and said she had her kmgergarten class write a poem about spring, which they'll deliver on the air.\ He said the affair went so well that there are tentative plans to welcome in future seasons in a similar manner.
