M tlll1 HWl ItHi'Wtl Soft touch for new jeans Press Republican - Wednesday, March 21,1979 7 DEAR HELOISE: When purchasing my sons new jeans recently I bought one of the packets of blue granular powder designed to soften and fade new jeans. I wasn't sure I would like it, so only used it on one pair. (Each packet softens one pair of jeans.) Worked great! However, since 1 didn't want to go out and buy more — it would have been rather expensive since I had three more pairs to do — I decided I would experiment with liquid fabric softener which I had on hand. I filled up the washing machine with hot water, added about three times the amount of fabric softener normally used for a load of clothes and let the jeans soak overnight. The next morning, I just spun the water out of them, and washed them as I normally would. After drying, they felt as soft to me as the ones soaked in the commercial product, yet the cost was much less. If you like the jeans faded somewhat, you can add a cup of bleach to the tub of water. Mix well with the fabric softener before ad- ding the jeans. — Regina Moore Guys and gals, fabric softener does work to soften new jeans. I've used it on several pairs of mine with no apparent harmful results. \ Hints from Heloise However, I would caution you to be careful if you use the bleach. Don't pour it directly onto the jeans as this would weaken the fibers. Be sure it is well mixed. — Heloise DEARHELOISE: What would we do without that good ol' vinegar? It's almost as in- dispensable as the nylon net! My husband thought that an elec- tric stove with a ceramic top would be just the thing. It turned out that it can be kept cleaner than the conven- tional top range but, oh, the rubb- ing. One day, I thought, \Why not try Heloise's vinegar.\ Well, you know the rest. After the first soaking, it looked so good, I tried it a second time. Now, it's easier to keep clean us- ing the vinegar, and is as white as when brand new. — Mrs. Wafer HinU Prom Him DEARHELOISE: I manage to keep most of my house clean except for my desk. I know where everything is on it, but it is always a mess. This might be cheating a little, but to solve my dilemma I bought a roll top desk. Now I can work in my organized mess and hide it when company comes. — John Woodall DEARHELOISE: I love to knit and crochet. I use a tall, large olive bottle to keep small scissors, darning needles, short knitting needles, odd crochet hooks and stitch holders in. Keeps them from getting* misplaced and it's sure nice to know where to look. — Elinor Andrews DEARHELOISE. My husband wears a tie to work every day. To help him choose them more easily, here's what I did : I took two decorator towel rods, put them on the wall in the dressing area — one above the other, allow* ing hanging room for the ties. * Many ties can be hung on the two rods. It's very attractive plus he has no trouble picking out the tie he waifts. —Constance Lum WftKE UP, ITS We are really cleaning up for Spring at Barbara Moss Date calendar PUtUburgh Today f Treadwells Mills Chapter of Home Bureau meeting, 7:30 p.m. Project: coon.
