George Washington University and Hartwick College --PLATT5BU&GH Nip Rogers appear to be at the head of Rogers' year, wouXKTUp 11*3 in conference play and 14-7 overall. The Knights won the Northern Adirondack Tip- Qff Tnnrr* generated almost as much excite- ment around Lake Placid this winter as the fast-approaching 1980 Olympic Games with some Rogers rooters even going so far as to say the six-foot-seven basketball stan- dout had a better year than the plh Nevertheless, the winter resort area high on skiing, skating, hockey and sledding found itself more basketball-conscious than ever before this year as Rogers led the Lake Placid Blue Bombers to their first league championship in 30 years and their second straight Sec- tion Seven Class B championship. Mountain & Valley Athletic Con- ference coaches who had marvelled at the performance of the senior sensation all year had little trouble making Rogers a unanimous choice as the Press-Republican's MVAC Player of the Year for the second year in a row. \There isn't much to say about Nip that hasn't been said already,\ said Elizabethtown Coach Gary Hathaway. \He did it all and brought a lot recognition to our area.' It wasn't long before college recruiters from far and wide had begun to take notice of Rogers' feats list. Rogers, who scored over 1,500 points in his high school career, led the MVAC in scoring for the second straight year, averaging 27.8 points per gajne. He also figured for 20.3 rebounds a contest. \I don't believe that there has been a single player La mir league who has contributed more to a basketball program or a rharnpion- ship team than Nip has,\ Lake Placid Coach Steve Morgan said. \His talent on the court is ex-* ceeded only by his qualities as a fine young man.\ Rogers is not just a big kid who can score a lot of points. He drew rave reviews for his passwork and his ability to bring the ball up the floor when the need arose. His range was limited to the key with the agile center effective from all areas of the floor. Harrica top coach Sharing the spotlight with Rogers is Dannemora's Paul Harrica, the Press-Republican's MVAC Coach of the Year for the 1978-79 season. The Knights finished regular season play tied for first with Lake Placid, but lost out in a one-game playoff for the conference championship. Dannemora, a 6-8 ballclub last Harrica had three starters back from last year, but he still had to find a replacement for first team all-star guard Brad Bowman and another forward. His bench in Uje pre-season was nothing for rival coaches to become excited about, but as the season progressed, the Knights blossomed into one of the area's top quintets. Two of Harrica'g charges, guard won two games for Dannemora with last-second shots, was third in scor- ing in the MVAC with an 18.2 av#rag#, H6 also averaged £^4 Chris Sullivan and forward\ Kris Mullady, are first team MVAC All- Stars while Mike Weaver, a sophomore forward, is a second team PR selection. Bollock on first team Rounding out the MVAC's elite unit are Westport's Mike Bullock, a second team all-star forward last year'who made the successful tran- sition to guard this season, and Crown Point forward Tim Greene. Elizabethtown, third in the MVAC one game behind Lake Placid and Dannemora in regular season play, landed two men on the second team. Guard Jay Hooper and forward Mike Rider of the Lions join Weaver, Lake Placid forward George Stahler and Schroon Lake guard Marty Welch on the second team. Sullivan, a clutch shooter who assists a game. Sullivan had six games of 21 or more points with his season high 28 points. Bullock, second in scoring with a 22.7 norm, was called on to play guard midway through the season for an inexperienced Eagle team struggling to hit on die right backcourt combination. He responded by averaging nine recoveries and seven asnistM in addi- tion to 13 rebounds a game. Bullock had 21 or more points 11 times this season, hitting for 35 and 34 points on two occasions. Mullady, who had 30 rebounds against Crown Point in a mid- season match-up, was second in that department to Rogers with 18.8 a game. He also finished fifth in scor- ing with a 16.4 norm. He had a 33- point night against Westport and four games of 24 or more points. Crown Point's Tim Greene was a near unanimous choice as a first team forward. The 6-2 senior averaged 15.5 points per game, and was instrumental in Panther vic- tories over Lake Placid, Dan- nemora and Elizabethtown. He had 25 points in a losing effort against Lake Placid, but came back to score 17 while turning in a fine defensive game in a 57-51 win over the title- bound Blue Bomers. Wek* 'Jr JR.** 9. r
