The multilevel wood frame mill was engulfed m flames when more than 40 volunteer firemen and three pieces of breTighting equipment arrived at 7 a.m. - The company employs 12 persons, but only one man— Xeland Smith—was on duty. No one was injured. Smith, who had been working in the mill alooe during the night, attempted to reach a fire extinguisher when the building filied with smoke. He said he wasn't sure where the fire was. When he couldn't make it through the smoke he went to telephone the lire department ' Plant manager Vincent Strebe said that he had been called to the mill at 1:50 a.m. when Smith reported he was having trouble keeping the 15-inch machine belt from slipping due to the extreme cold. Strebe said he left the mill at 5:30 a.m. and did not notice anything was wrong. •vXhfi^belt transmitted power from the main line from the water wheel in the creek. It entered the mill at a height of 20 feet and carried power to overhead shafting throughout ' the mill. • . . . • The plant had three sprinkler systems believed to have been in working order. It is not known if they worked It is suspected they did but were unable to handle the intense blaze that developed from the friction of the jammed belt Jt was apparent that had there been strong winds the nearby International Paper Co. and the Ticonderoga busi- ness district, as well as several homes, would have been threatened. , , ^ Flames gushed over MM feet into the air, fcUowfcjg the •<. -•. - rupture of a 10,000^aflon fuel ofl Large hot particles from the blase were carried tab air, failing as far away as time mite fa the «*t <tf JN«fc otnt and Baldwin Rds» $? -•:-^*#^$m>~$*&j9 < One firanaa remarked, \Hunt God .the roofs!* 1 -• 'it^T: • yfyv^-^ji^^ i &&$$j&i All equipment in the mill was lost but some tm pounds of graphite may be salvaged. * „ •;-*/•<•,^~>- Gordon O'DeU said that he was coming to work 6:50 a.m. from Us trailer residence across the street from the mill. -. v . ^ t : ,,.. .,-,--. - ; -^^v*&**& \ He said he did not notla any rigns of srodte or fire « that time and that when he got to the nuO be thought he no- ticed a smell \lite a belt\ and immediately weot to search of Smith. < - .: r •,•-.*. .v-^-., - .iiw •\......- The firm as of late Tuesday had no plans lor rthifldmg, Officials of the parent firm—Joseph Dtxoo Orudble O* of Jersey City.
