Apply to silks of ^ars only, beginning when first silks are first noticeable, aiid re peat every two or three days for five or six applications. One way to reduce earworm damage without Spraying is to make about four plantings of sweet corn at two week intervals.^ You’ll usuaily find that one plant ing is pretty well riddled by the earworm. One planting is likely to be free or nearly free of worihs. The two that remain may have •worms feeding on the upper infch two of the ear, but a quick chop with a butcher knife and you have a pretty good sized ear of corn that is wormfree. PRUNE EVERGREENS Why is it so many home-owners hate to prune their evergreens? It is because' they’re so bogged dow'n with rules that the job frightens them? There are two ways to maintain evergreens: (1) Keep them trimmed forrnally, or (2) let them grow their natural shape. That new fuzzy growth on your evergreens now, is ideal for shearing and clipping,' so resolve to tackle them today. Globe ar- borvitae, spreading yews, retino- spo\ as are examples of evergreens which can be sheared into a smooth surface, using sharp hedge shears. To keep these pruned to formal shapes you simply 'take the shears and trim off the ends 'of the fuzzy growth, without any re gard as to where the buds are. While this formal shearing is not considered good landscape prac tice by some you see it often around the best maintained homes, and to me it looks a lot better than, an evergreen that gets no prun ing whatsoever. ■' If you object to the sheared look, allow some of the new growth to come along later to Easy Does It...
