Thurgood SwitMnglon-Jones, let. Several items of mtereat have been brought to my attention these past few weeks that this writer feels deserve some kind of answer. How to answer them without appearing either malicious or politically orientated is very difficult, con^whatmayandUMAwhatyournaythiiA-^heseremy The first is in regard to certain items printed in the Cornerstone\ a publication of the Spencerport School District, Let me be the first to say that this person has no - - - - - .-..1 „ _ m . __ ..— xl ... beaded by Mr. Reginald Garwood, tha latter being a stout type of fellow', was in the best interests of all tax paying citizens, bowever-why should department heads be eape^Hed to ouTycwtaMtioral duties after scho()l hours? We all 1*<8 our leisure time, so why shouW any teachers be expected to carry out any duties after the? school is dosed for the day? f^~ The nextitemand one that really makes the back of my hair simply bristle is in regard to providing closer supervision with building administrators and teachers, white students are on school proiterlytohcfcyelfauMtcthe estimated #0,000 damage per year.\ As one who takes a promenade around our school properties he can attest to the pig sty* appearance of the grounds, but that responsibility should not rest with the school authorities, that is a prime responsibility of all parents, thereby ffliminating that $10,000 levy against all tax payers. The disciplinary action that Mr. Garwood refers to is nothing more than a myth, try it sane time and you will see what this writer means. Finafly, the committee suggests closing the Trowbridge School. This is an excellant suggestion, it can then join all the other schools that have been closed or are about to be dosed in the County of Monroe. Tms, to my way of thinking, is due in part to \-try poor administration in having it built in the first place. However, there is a solution: Knowing hill well the obstacles involved with the people on the State level, but abo knowing roll well that WE are the tax payers on all levels of government, my suggestion is this, and it would abo relieve us all of a proposed burden which is now before oorkKal government This is the proposed $190,100 plus to purchase and refurbish-the Matbeos building for a town hall. Tte closmg of tl>e school would make an excellant Community Center if one would just forget the location. LISTEN VETERAN 3. My father served on the Mexican border in the U.S. Army before World War I. Is he qualified for a pension? A. He may qualify for disability pension payments provided he served honorably for 90 days or more in Mexico, or in one of the adjacent states, or in Guatemala or British Honduras, or served at sea in the area of Mexico. Q. A friend jfets maximum disability compensation from tbeVA because of war injuries. He works for the state at a good salary, and sell* insurance at night. A fellow employee has challenged his entitlement to disability payments. Ishe s entitled to them? A. Yes, if he is receiving compensation for a service connected disability. Outside income has no bearing whatever on this type of compensation. The law does not penalize a veteran who through special! effort overcomes his handicap. The fellow employee must have confused- compensation with pension-tbe latter being based on permanen and total disability, but not service-connected. Pension-floi compensation-is affected by outside income. Q. I am a Vietnam veteran recently discharged because of a service-connected disability. Due to an accident, I am totally disabled. Can I apply for a VA pension? A. Yes. Veterans of the Vietnam Era with 90 or more days of honorable service, or those separated from such service for a service connected disability, who become permanen- tly and totally disabled from reasons not traceable to service, may be eligible for a nonHserviceconnected disability pension. So why spend more money when this building could be available? The other item of interest concerns a statement made by Councilman Mr. Donald Burris with regard to his thoughts on tb< local polk* aepartmerrt This writer can agree with most of his thinking Out loud' however, there is onetrwughtthatcanneverbeagreedto: Reference 3 made at this time to, and 1 quote, Police should tise discretion when dealing with local residents- remindersof dangers of speeding seems prudent at times\ unquote. A policeman anrjotbearKlr^versrHHildbeahjdge'andjury*. Laws are made to be enforced, the court administers justice. If you do not wantalaw to be enforced, then rave it reinoved from the books, but don*t expect a policeman to act as an enforcement officer and judge both. Finally, it is the local people who should be brought to book for violations of any law, that is the only way they will respect their police department If the police do not arrest any of the local citizenry, then out of towners will be the ordy ones arrested, and the town will get a hame* such as the southern town that only arrests people passing through*.
