The Stones came from Massa- chusetts, Mrs. Stone brought with her the seeds of a sweet apple that grew in an orchard on her father's farm in that state. She planted them and raised a fine orchard of the same variety of ap- ples. Jn the season of IbSS the trees bore apples that were as sour as they had been sweet before, and their fruit was sour ever afterward. One of those trees of that original orchard is stand- ing yet and bore apples for the last time three years ago. They were sweet—the first sweet apples it had borne since lsh4.—-Bath (>*. Y.) An Exrttlag Uf*. Sir J. B. Thurston of Fiji fame has led a highly exciting life. Be was a storekeeper in the '\bush when he was prevailed upon to take a. trading expedition to the south Pacific. The ves- sel in which he traveled was wrecked in a terrible hurricane, and after Fome hairbreadth escapes he succeeded, with a few otners, in reaching Fiji. A na- tive monarchy existed at the time en the island, and young Thurston was in- stalled as a clerk m the B*Hy~k rrms-a- ! late. After a time the king—Thakombau ! I by name—appointed him prime min- ister. ^ Believe nothing against another but I on good authority, and never report i what may hurt ancthcr unless it be a t greater hurt to some other to conceal ib —Penn.
