The gr^at Catholic paper, the New | York Catholic Union, has these • true* words to say coooerning the 8unday issue this fall. Its opinions ji are to the ; otnt, and indicat* a deter romation to see to it, oo the part of the Church, that tin* institution of Sunday is not overthrown in this State The Catholic people of New York per I will not vote to open the saloons oo Sunday. That is a Axed fact it is •aid that the German element will be eohd for Tammany oo that issue, that the German beer interest, hav- in* tried the republicans and got flouted, must, nolens voleas, take Tammany or nothing—on Tarn many 1 * own terms, not theirs '•There are, we believe, thirty thou sand members of our church societies and Irish American associations in this city that are quite content and pleased to see the saloons closed and fcept closed by Roosevelt or anyone else 'The concrete fact is, it has been ascertained that a great saving is felt among the families of our hard work- ing wage earners. The cries of want among the children of poor families ! are lessened ; the dire straits of poor wives and mothers to provide the daily meals and get necessary little articles of clothmg are alleviated somewhat sinctf the salo ns, under Roosevelt and Strong, have b*eu closed more tightly than they used to be.\ i Here is an element of vast strength ! to fortify the republican position. ' | The Sunday question is not a narrow j sectarian one merely, as brought into j this canvass. Some use the day for j worship, some for recreation, some for rest. The party this fall makes no war upon either use of the day, | but the contention is that existing' la we Bhall be maintained, that one class of business deserves no more protection on that day than another, I that the thousands of employees in I saloons and liquor stores should not be compelled by their over greedy employers to labor seven days in the week when the operatives in other lines of labor work but six days in the week. •iT-'v ^•-„- -~ 1 Food Digestive. One, perhaps the most interesting to Americans, because the nearest home, is the war for independence now waging in Cuba. It is not the first time that the Cubans have reao - lately striven to achieve their free- dom from Spain, Hitherto their efforts have been spasmodic and fruitless in arousing any consider- able amount of sympathy on the part of onlookers. Their efforts at the present have been well directed, and to an onlooker at this distance, in- apired by all the instincts which .prompt high minded men every - where to live their own masters as individuals, and to govern them- aelves as members of an organised community. Spain is hardly a second rate power. She has so ruled her dependencies, and particularly Cuba, as to arouse the hatred of her sub- jects and forfeit the good offices of the powers. The Spanish mind sxeme unable to realise the higher suad nobler aspirations which am mate the souls of Germanic racea. Spanish rule in Cuba has been op-, preserve, severe, unbearablef Why ashould not this great, fertile island | -. be freer Why should not tbe struggle j > of these would be patriots be recog \' J3ai2c£ by titis nationT What would • z . Ate the harm should the moral sup- ; -\ pan of America be tendered to Cuba, * iStod such steps taken as would at ^ <a»oe recognise the Cubans as beilig grants bafore the world \ We admire }-'m\ foreign policy that has snap in it. The tame is ripening for this, and Hon. Foster L Backus has been nominated for district attorney by she republicans of Kings county. This is especially pleasing to people this way, first; because Mr. Backus is an able man and a good lawyer, and, second, beoau**;be Is a native of the town of Russell, brother of ex-Sheriff Backus, an alumnus of St Lawrence University, and otherwise identified with old 81. Lawrence. Jir. Backus achieved not a little notoriety in the Jrf»w Toigs Oet. T. -As a result of the rmiifissnia of the several anti Tammany orgaaisuiocat, the follow ing fusion ticket was agreed upon Ito-nigbt: J\* lodges of the supreme court, a a Seaman, rep., Ernest Hall, rep.. Meyer 8 Isaacs, rep; for registrar, Thomas F. Keating, state deovjeraoy; forjudges of the court of general ssssimn Thomas S Alii son, rep, John Fennel, state demo eracy; for Judges of the city court, Banry C Botty. rep^ Daniel O'Oon neil, stale democracy, James W. Hawes, rap.; for county clerk, Thomas L. Hamilton, rep. The decision wa*a ,k Uim down\ for the good gorsrnmeot club men, as it WM thousiht that their candidate for suprecne court, Hamilton Odell, would receire a place on the ticket. aUEnrauoAV ooorrr ooafMrrrss. The adjourned republican countr cosnmittee met to night at Lyric hall and rafwfifnated the fusion ticket. The vote on Mr. Lraterbach's motion to accept ths ticket agreed upon in oonfereoos with the other antt Tam- many otiganiaHUione, was &1 to 34. The platform endorses the notnina- tions and the platform of the repub lioan state convention and heartily affirms the demand for the nnrnkiav ttoo of Levi P. Morton for president of the Uni.ed Statea The exciee plank is as follows : *Tbe present excise law was fath ered and introduced inthele«rislature by a Tammany hail assemblyman and was passed at a time when Tarn many hall held undisputed control of all branches of the law making power. 80 long as Tammany hall controlled the police department and the courts this onerous and oppres sive statute was freely used as a measure for levying blackmail, for coercing and oppressing political opponents, for favoring and protect ing political friends and for collecting political assessment*\ \We insist that every citizen is entitled to the fact of his citixenship to enjoy the largest measure of per eooai freedom consistent with the welfare of the community and not in conflict with the moral and religious convictions at his fellow citiaena While we believe that the sanctity of Sunday should be maintained in the interests of religion, of public morals and of health, through rest from all unnecessary labor on that day, we also believe due regard should be had to the sentiments and the customs of that large portion of the community who desire on that day to enjoy some orderly and harmless recreation. We therefore favor and will endeavor to secure such modification of existing laws as will prevent blackmail, par tiality and oppression, and will enable the city to determine for itself byt>y popularr vote,e whether the sale of Two from BeilsvOs for the abjssaents of the International Bridge arrived yes- terday by the Grand Trunk.
