TO THE PUBLIC. \What ! another paper in Washington county 1\ Yes, dear reader, but ours is such a little one that it will not take up much room, and we bespeak for it your for- bearance for a season, and by- and-by, if we prosper, it may grow larger, and por- haps wiser. - But even though its dimen- sions do not expand, you know small things fulfill their mission even as 4o larger ones. There are floating palaces on our lakes and rivers, and there aré al- so numerous liftle propellers which frisk about, and sometimes make as much noise as the leviathan in all its pride of breadth, strengthand beauty. ' And then _+ again the small craft has the advantage of its greater neighbor, which is often stranded on the overslough, while the little fellow glides along regardless of winds, storms and low water; and is sometimes very handy in carrying into port panic-stricken passengers who are so unfotunate as to find themselves impa- tiently pacing the deck of some weather bound monster craft. and we will plow along as best we may, with a good word for all who deserve it, and censure where censure becomes a duty. While we shall eschew partisan poli |seen as many years as have those who tics, we shall deem it our duty to speak fearlessly of men. and matters as they transpire ; giving credit where credit is due, and censure where censure is due. Great pains will be taken to render the literary department of our paper accep- table to all, both old and young. * The passing local events of the day will form a prominent feature in that , department. 'We have a corps of intelli- gent correspondents. located in néegrly every hamlet, who will keep our rea- ders posted in all matters of interest in their respective neighborhoods. - In this respect we shall not be behind any of our contemporaries. 'We ask not to be judged by this initial number, either in matter or mechanical execution. Ourtime has been so much occupied in getting ready for;iour advent that we have not had the leisures to pre- pare and arrange matter as we hope to in the future. Our press is new and not yet in good working order, but hope to present you with amore palatable repast in the future. Our jobbing department is complete, and we are prepared to do work unsur- passed by that from any office in the county, and at satisfactory rates. There, we have said our say, and now launch our little craft on the sea of pub- Hic opinion, bespeaking for it a share of public pitronage, with the earnest hope that its weekly visitations may not prove altogether unwelcome wherever it may cast anchor. GEORGE L. Terry, seems, at the present writing, the most prominent. No one acquainted with the gentleman will question for a moment his entire fit ness for the place. He is a lawyer of acknowledged ability, a fluent and elo- quent debater, quick to perceive and prompt to act, never forgetting the gen- tleman in his zeal to accomplish the end under consideration. Mr. Terry has rep- resented this district for two successive terms in the Legislature, and no one will couple his name with any scheme of job- bery, or with dwarfing his manhood at the behest of the ring which has too long ruled the State with a rod of iron. The honor of a third election, by ary unprece- dented majority, shows the estimation in which Mr. Terry is held by those who know him best. With his politics we have nothing to do, but speak of him on- ly as a man admirably qualified for the honorable and responsible position to which he aspires. The names of other prominent gentle: men are before the public in connection with the Speakership, but we trust the honor will be conceded to.this county, a county which alwaysresponds to the Of course Alvord and Husted are ap- young men, who do the hard work of worn the honors so long, now gracefully retire, at least for one year, and thereby give place to others equally worthy and competent, even though they have not seem to think that wisdom will die with them.
