E d i t o r s , — In t h e address of the Ge neral Repub'ican Committee ofthe cily of Alba ny, amrng a variety of singular declarations, the following may be found “ The idea o f an ex clusive metallic currency has nevei had any coun\ tenance either from tlie slate or national admini stration, and can only be advocated by those who are ignorant of tiie condition and wants 'of the country, or who have some sinister ends in view.” This committee, these honest republicans, must have very short memories; for it is inthe recollec tion o fevery onu e’se, that in 1 ti34 and 1333. the Party furnished Beaton’s ‘-yellow boys” to iheir hireling politician* in all parts of tho country to show to the people as the administration curren cy ; and thousands were made to believe that gold and silver could be furnished by the governmetq sufficient for all jupposes, nnd that if the parly could be sustained, it would be the only currency. Our Indian AJfdirs .— Every thing in re lation to our Indian affairs for the present seems to be quiet, unless we except a skirmish between a company of Georgia volunteers and a gang of Indians, which tdok place on the Suwannee some days ago, in which oue Indian was killed* Information wns received some days since from Fort King, that a gang of In dians, seventeen in number, had gone there. .They visit their frieadg, the Creeks, freely, and say they have strict orders not to molest, any of the whites, or commit any depredations upon thetr prop erty. They state, that when Gen. Jesup rode up from Tampa to Fort King, he passed within twenty paces of them. It is Get). Jesup’s plan to keep them quiet, if possible, during the summer, and in the mean time he is endeavoring sa to post the troops wilh a regard to their health, and to hold themselves in readi ness to act according to circumstances witb efficiency and promptness. LFe n is sent for some of the northern Indians, Miamies and Shawnees, and no! the Choctaws as we stated some weeks since .— Charleston Mercury, J u ly 17. The Pensacola Gazette of the 3th inst- contains a letter (rom Col. Brown, dated the 7th, stating that on the 4th he had a skirmish with a party oflndians, supposed about iOO. on Sito.-il river, in which he drove the enemy, hiving three ofhis men wounded. The greatest anxi,ety existed in Liver pool, during the week ending the 8 th, for the arrival of the Europe, packet of May 16th, from N ew York. The most gloomy apprehensions existed of further news of insolvency in the United States. Mr. Thos. Atwood, member for Birm- ingham, brought the state of commercial distress before Parliament, June Sth, in a powerful speech. He expressed his regret that Peel’s Currency Bill was ever enact ed. He said that every man in Britain but the fundholder and the fixed annuitant was robbed, but that as much evilWould now result from repealing as from confin ing the bill; The debt of the nation, he. thought, being contracted in paper, ought also to be liquidated in that hind of money. Then jusfice would have been done to the business classes; and no harm to the pub lic good would have ensuedi Lord Brougham has made a severe speech against the slovenly patchwork manner in which business is conducted in Parliament. The immense crowd of pri vate bills has greatly impeded the action of parliament, on which private affairs theie are 30 to 40 committees sitting daily. Tha most alarrnicg reports were in cir culation on tha 8 :tt in London, respecting the health ofthe King, Much caused great anxiety. On the 7th (he King was so much worse that an exp«e-s was sent to London for the two physicians in aiten- the most dreadful accidents by lightning ever known in this part of the country. The following facts are derived from a gentleman near the scene of the disaster. 'Dining the thunder storm on Tuesday night, the llth inst., the house of Mr. Walter Hawley, situated about three miles west of the Ridgefield church, was struck with lightning, and, distressing to relate, Mr. Hawley, his son, and grand child, were instantly killed, while in bed. Mrs. Hawley, immediately after the flash, called several times to her husband, who slept in an adjoining room, and, not being answered, she went to the bed, and found her husband a corpse. She then called upon her son, who occupied a room be low, and he not answering, she hastened to the spot, and found him and his child dead, and his wife senseless, who, it is supposed, cannot recover—aud who Was delivered of a fine child early on the foi. lowing morning, which does not appear to be .affected in the least degree by the shock. The house was situated cn a height, having trees near it, but no eled- tric conductor on the house. Election in Illinois .— Special elections have been hjeld in se\eral counties in Illi nois to fill vacancies in the Legislature, preparatory to their m e e t i n g in extra ses sion. The Whigs have been successf id in them all. In Sangamon and Morgan the Yan Burenites were distanced, and the Senatorial district of Madison, St.- Clair, and Monroe, Gen. James B. Moore, \he Whig candidate, has been triumphant. Death o f M r. Macon .—The venerable Macon of North Carolina, died at his res idence in Warren county on the 29th ult. aged 83. He was a man of good mind, plain manners and warm patriotism. He w a s a personal friend of Mr. Jefferson.
