BRYAN MAKES CONCESSIONS. Mr. Bryan is surprised; Mr. Bryan is actually; amazed. It Is such a startling thing td awaken from his long-indulg ed dream that there is no good thing in the Republican party, that he actu ally grows eloquent in admitting the truth. Just hear his voice as yj edmes wafting aerpss the seas froni’ipei?lin, under date of the 27th inst.:*' ^ ' ^ “In my meeting with citizens of my country sojourning abroad I have been relieved of one of the fears 1 had iii' 1S96. I was afraid if I was not elected it might be difficult to find good men outside of the Democratic party to rep resent the United States abroad, but I have found so many good Americans, and Republicans, too, who honor their country in diplomatic and consular po sitions th^t I will go back relieved of one of my fears. I desire to acknowl edge my gratitude to the representa tives of my country everywhere.” * And it is even intimated that on his return to,the United States Mr. Bryan will advotate a hill at Washington pro viding that the United States govern ment build houses for its ai^assadors that'party indefinitely. It now only re mains for Mr. Bryan to admit as can didly that numerous other fears -whidi he entertained in 1896 have been thoroughly dissolved, and then the Ne braska statesman and present honored traveler will be in actual touch with tUe popular thought of the country. For instance, Mr. Bryan feared the whole country would go to the dogs if he were not elected, but he would never have been rich enough to enjoy his foreign tour if he had not grown rich through Republican prosperity.* It is now in or der for Mr. Bryan to have ^dther^geii- erous streak, and confess that p i ^ f tion and sound money are not so had as he.‘J5fi®eed,±hfey might he, just as he has admitted the personal virtues of the Republican gentlemefi entrusted with his country’s diplomatic affairs abroad. Too much, however, must not be ex pected of tne silver apostle all at once. It is a hopeful sign that he has brought himself4o admit so much, and ’With thht we must perforce be content for present.
