14 GAS ATTACK CAMOUFLAGE. In the first picture, to the left, you see a peaceful landscape; the lowing herd winds slowly o’er the lea. In the trench in the foreground three Germans walk their post in their military manner. The one in the middle is especially on the alert. In the sequel, to the right, you see that the lowing herd is not so innocent. You see the man behind the cow. Another victory for Sammee. AMBULANCE COMPANY NO. 108. Lieutenant Jones, who has just finished a special course of training in New York, is now on detached service at the A rtillery Range. Carrol Combs, our very efficient motorcycle ■ d river, has successfully taken his machine all apart, cleaned it, and put it together again. He didn }t have any screws, nuts or burrs left over, either. Mrs. Buell, Mrs. Meeker and Mrs. Hooks spent Tuesday w ith their husbands at camp. He even shifts bun dles from one arm to the other so that he may execute the salute in the prescribed manner. Last Monday at dinner we were shocked to find our potatoes already peeled for us. We have since learned that the K. P. ’s sat up until eleven o ’clock the night before pre paring them. Private Boughton has been appointed “ I n cinerator Specialist.” Congratulations. Corporal Robbins, who has been doing his “ b i t ” at guard duty, complains of m y ste rious figures sneaking about his post. These marauders, he asserts, threw pieces of coal at his defenseless back. The entire eighth sec tion turned out to help him but to no avail, for the offenders had fled. Sergeant Haucke is holding an investigation. W. C. R. HEADQUARTERS CO., 107TH U. S. IN FANTRY. The pioneer platoon is fast becoming ex pert at ditch digging. Every m o rning they sally forth w ith picks and shovels, and are lucky if they get back in tim e for retreat. If Sergeant O’Dyer ever sets a pace for us to m a rch by again, we shall think se riously of handing in our resignation from the army. P rivates Conklin and Totrnan had a novel match the other afternoon. They were a t tem p ting to standardize the m e tric system to the different parts of their anatom y. Tot- man, w ith the aid of a box to stand on, was just able to reach a m e ter m a rk on a pole, while Conklin had trouble locating the same m a rk on account of having to bend his back so far. P rivate McGovern travels around w ith an insurance blank in one hand these days. He has certainly persuaded us th a t we are go ing to die soon. Has anyone any extra w atts, volts, or m eter loops? Privates W h ite and Roy, of Corporal Doneley’s squad would certainly appreciate it if the party, or parties who have them , would come out like men and say so. They have spent all their spare tim e this week going from one sergeant’s tent to another trying to locate a few. Let us hope th a t the rew a rd of perseverance will be theirs soon. The band is doing fine. They practice so much during the day th a t they are satisfied to quit after tattoo now. W e are satisfied, too. AN OBSERVER. HEADQUARTERS 2ND ANTI-AIRCRAFT* M. Gr. BATTALION. I t is nearly time we let the rest of the camp know who, and what we are. The* A n ti-A ircraft B attalion was formed the 5th of January, picked men being sent from the' various regiments. We immediately moved to* our new camp site (that of the old 74th) and started to prepare for the arrival of our men. At present we are anxiously w a it ing their arrival, as we expect this to be- one of the crack organizations in camp. Many well known members of the old New York Guard are with us. Captain W. Simon son, well known to the members of the old 23rd has already earned the respect and af fection of his new command. We also have the genial and merry “ Buck T a y lor” with us, as 1st Sgt. of A Co. and he has already won the same popularity which was his with the men of the old 12th., 71st, and the 105th. W ith his all-round athletic ability and coaching we expect to develop some teams which will hold their own with the larger organizations. The wagoners have their daily battle as to* who will go the privilege of driving our thoroughbred mules. Keep it up, Finnegan., you are in the lead. Sgt.
