' . . ifjori: Andrea Cook ;: Dear editor, Sadly, as an Oneida Indian I can personally confirm the serious problems associated with at least one Indian casino. The Oneida Indian Nation of New York, Inc. runs the largest gambling facility in this state but has never given our people any kind of reports; all of its operations are non-native. This corporate entity exists in defiance of our democratic her- itage. Because we seek a peaceful restoration of our traditional gov- ernment we are labelled 'dissi- dents' then stripped of our mem- bership benefits, evicted from our homes and prosecuted in a tribal court which has specifically exempted tribal leaders from its jurisdiction. Since tribal style gov- ernments are not bound by the Bill of Rights we don't have freedom of religion, freedom from unlaw- ful arrest or a free press. These so- called \representatives\ exploit a system imposed upon us by the Bureau of Indian Affairs; these \representatives\ cannot be removed from their positions since we don't have leadership review procedures of any kind. Our com- plaints to the US Justice Department have fallen on deaf ears, possibly because the Oneida Nationjnc. is the largest contribu- tor to the Republican Party in Indian country. Thank you for having the courage to print this story. Sincerely, Diane Shenandoah Thank You We would like to express our sin- cerest gratitude to our families, friends and community who have showed so much support, love and respect to Bobby Joe, myself and his family during this darkest time of our lives. It will never be for- gotten. We would like to thank the Three Nations Bridge Staff and Workers, your help was both comforting and appreciaim. To the Sons of the AmericiPLegion, for honor- ing him in the fashion that you did, he would have been so proud. The American Legion Auxiliary for preparing a wonderful meal for him and the Akwesasne Mohawk Police and Tribal Police for ensur- ing our drive to the church was uninterrupted. We truly appreciate all you have done. To John Ransom and the rest of Bobby Joe's friends for taken the time to prepare and delivery a beautiful eulogy and for making us laugh at him and with him just one more time. It was very heart- warming and for that we thank you. To Bobby Joe's Pall Bearers: Bruce, Ben, Scott, Dave, Hubie, Fuzzy, Tommy and Moochie, we want to thank you so very much for helping to make his journey easier and by just being there for him and us, you were truly best of friends. I would also like to thank my fam- ily; my mom, brothers, sister, brother and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews, for given me so much support and love which has truly carried me through to today. I could never begin to be able to thank you for showing Bobby Joe just how much he had truly become part of our family, for this you have my undying love and gratitude. To all the people who in one way or another sent support and prayers to us during this time, we send to you our heartfelt thank you and gratitude. You may have either sent food, flowers, cards, prayers or sat with Bobby Joe or just thought of us during this time, for these acts of kindness we are truly grateful and will always remember such compassion. Thank you.
