Janet Rith Nijarian, a graduate student from Syracuse's College of Environmental Science and Forestry called Indian Time last week and gave us her results. Before coming to SUNY—ESF for graduate school training, Janet received her Bachelor's degree with a major in Environmental Science and a minor in Native American Studies. These combined areas led her to a sensitivity to present day environmental problems faced by Native American peoples. Janet has developed a research plan to assist in the assessment of en- vironmental contamination at Akwesasne which specifically regards soil contamination and its ramifications. Janet has also received enthusiastic support for her study, as well as offered the use of equipment, laboratory facilities and staff assistance. The study Janet is involved in has had her busy taking samples from various parts of the reserve, including the area where dredging sludge was deposited from the St. Lawrence Seaway Project. The study also includes determin- ing levels and types of pollutants in the soil, and analyzing the impact of contamination on the soil biota. The techni- ques used by Janet has been proven to help determine soil contamination and the potential for movement of con- tamination through the food chain. More importantly it may elucidate the potential human health risks in years to come. Janet is also doing analyses of the uptake of soil con- . taminants by seeds and plants which are grown in Akwesasne vegetable gardens. This would require most lab work to accomplish but it would also entail collecting plant and seed specimens from Akwesasne gardens also. The results of Janet's study will be presented in an educational way to the community as soon as her results are conclusive. Analysis for the study should be completed by December 1985. Janet, has made soil and vegetarian collections from 48 dif- ferent areas of Racquette Point, the samples were taken from behind Ida Ransom's home, Tony Cole's residence and near Erin Oakes home, Janet had noticed that there was quite a lot of fluoride necrosis. Fiouride necrosis is damage to the vegetation by fluoride emissions. •• • , '••..' -•' ••••;•' • .;•'• -,•>.•,.;^.'-•'•',.•'' •. byCfaidyTerrance
