J-- Ann Gefell ends her 120 mile river odessey July 9, 1985, r arriving at the shore of Mohawk Territory. Ann began her trip from Kingston, Ontario travelling down the St. \Lawrence River by rowboat. Her purpose is to bring atten- tion to the pollution of the river. Ann Gefell is a member of Save The River which is based at 1000 Islands.., Ron LaFrance and. Jake Swamp were at the shore to greet Ann Gefell and to discuss some of the river pollution issues with her, Ann arrived at approximately noon after making her way through the Eisenhower Lock. 7 :'.' Photo Courtesy: Stoney Tribe Akwesasne Delegates Visit Alberta delegates from Akwesasne recently returned from a inp to Alberta. The three people included Band Council Chic!\ Mike Mitchell, Economic Development Officer Ernest Thompson and Employment Development Officer Vaughn Sunday. The purpose of this trip was to create ties of friend^ ship with the Hobbema bands Erminskine and Sampsonas well as with the Blood and Stoney Tribes. On Thursday Ju- ly 4th, men arid wdrneri were welcome to register. The col- .uriiri was set up by Burns and was a 60 foot high beam with bells at the 20, 40 arid 60 foot level. Burns said, \The pro- iceeds from the climb will be going to the starving people in Africa; I don't know how much money I will make from the climb, but I will be donating 110,000 to the USA for Africa ^•Fund.rOc^yK. •.\••• • •• . Photo: Dlanne Swamp George Vehicle Impounded AKNX 'ESASNF. — At approximately 9:45 on July 5, a vehicle apparently driven by Dean George was impounded by the New York State Police, until George goes to the police Sta- tion to face charges. - . •\•• / I he (reorge vehicle had parked in front of the Credit Inion Office at the Tribal Building when the Troopers park- ed in back of the vehicle so-that it couldn't leave. .-. /. r : The State Police called Guyette's Towing Service to tow the vehicle away but Loran Thompson told the police and the tow truck driver that Alvin Jock was on his way and that he would take the vehicle. The George vehicle was taken to the Jock Junk yard until its release by the State Police. Charges against George are: Unregistered vehicle. No in- surance, switched plates and uninspected vehicle. Six police vehicles were at the scene. ' •: •- •-,_•.• DianneSwamp Two Vehicle Accident ST. REGIS — The St. Regis Police Department are in- vestigating a two vehicle accident which occured at the in- tersection of Johnson Road and Ferry St. Charge* are pen- ding. Driver of a pickup truck, Pete Jacobs of the Village of St. Regis apparently ran through a stop sign and hit a van driven by Paul Thomas of Cornwall Island. The vaii over- turned from the impact, several passengers were in the van, and because they are minors, police would not give the names, there was only one serious injury., . One passenger was transported to Ottawa with head in- jury and fractured jaw. Family of Jason Thompson^ 14, of St. Regis have reported that he was in a coma for two days but Mas regained consiousness. Photo: GindyTerrance Two Motorcyclists Injured RACQUETTE — On Saturday July 6th, there was a motor- cycle accident on the Cole-Caldwell Bridges at 1 pm. Donald J. Willard, 53, and Jacquelyn •WMard-41, j ; from Cornwall On- tario were east bound on Route #37, when their front brake 6n their motorcycle locked causing them to skid 50 feetjph the road; After hitting a bump in the road, they overturned and travelled 250 more feet sideways, . Jacquelyn received facial cuts and abrasions. She also received cuts on her right arm and shoulder: Both'..cyclists were transported to Hotel Dieu Hospital in Cornwall by the Akwesasne Emergency Team. , Cindy Terrance local Resident Charged it! Fatal Accident: AKWESASNE — On the morning of July 3rd; there was a two vehicle accident on Route 37 in front of Shaftt's Place! 'The accident occurred at 4;2O a.m. A car driven by-\-Andrew Laughing, 24 of St. Regis Road was east bound on Route 37 and was attempting to turn around in the road, He pullectio the right shoulder and while turning around ih the roadj a tractor trailer which was also east bound hit the Laughing vehicle in the left rear. The tractor trailer was operated by Bernard Patenaude, 54 of Waddington, New York After the initial collision, the driver of the car and 2 passengers fled the scene on foot. Daniel Cree, 17, of Pyke Road, Hogansburg was pinned in the car. The Akwesasne Emergency Team went to the scene of the accident, freed Cree and transported him to Massena Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead Oft ar- rival by Doctor Kim. An autopsy performed on Wednesday afternoon stated that Cree's death was caused by a broken neck. Andrew Laughing and passengers, Michael Jacobs, 23 of §t, Regis Road and Angus Jacobs, 19, also of Hogansburg returned to the scene of the accident one hour after the acci- dent happened. Laughing was charged with vehicular manslaughter, (a felony), drinking while intoxicated, the scene, unsafe left turn, unlicensed operator, vehicle arid unregistered vehicle Laughing was before Town Justice George Bero ori Wednesday w and then taken to Malone County Jail where he is being* prt f 100,000 bail. Photo: Ctody Terrance Local 440 Election UTICA — Philip Patrick Bradley was re-elected on June 28th as Business Agent for Local Ironworkers Union 440. Patrick Bradley ran against 'Oka' Dick Jacobs in the June 28th elec- tion. Pat Bradley received 179 votes, with 'Oka' Dick Jacobs receiving 113. One month before the election, at a monthly meeting of Local 440 members, Pat Bradley was nominated by Brandon Bradley. 'Oka' Dick Jacobs was nominated by Clyde Cree for the position of Business Agent. The position for B:A. is a three year term. Elections were held in Utica on June 28th with voting from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. Pat Bradley won the elections by 66 votes with 292 members voting. There are presently 400 active men in Local 440. \ Pat Bradley has been Business Agent for Local 440 for ; the past 22 years. He was first elected business agent in 1963. After this three year term he will have been business agent • for'25 years. Prior to becoming business agent for Local 440, Bradley has been an ironworker for 39 years. A late comer to the event, Vilas .Follett, a painter from Brushton took first place for his weight division making the 60 foot climb in 13.85 seconds^ Follett said, \tsaw the beam, and its kind of like a mountain, I had to climb!\ Second place for the 100-140 pound class went to Eugene Tarbell for a time of 15.16 seconds. Gary Perkins took third place with 18.28 seconds for the 60 foot clirnb. Tom Herne received fourth place for a time, of 2021 seconds. The second weight division was for competitors weighing .. between 141-160 pounds. Charles \Jebo\. Thompson took first place for this division with a time of 19.27 seconds for the 60'.foot level.'Steve Jacobs was second with a time of 22.34- Mark Terrance was third with a time of 22.75 seconds. ; \ .\•' The third division was for competitors who weighed bet-- ween l6i-l8GTpounds. Jerry McDonald received first place for the 60 foot level with a time of 15.69. Steve Barnes was second with a time of 15.75. Lincoln Roundpoint took third place with a time of 19.41 seconds for the 60 foot level. The fourth division was for men between the 180-200 pounds, Fabian; Hart took first place for the 60 foot climb with a time of 13.80 seconds. Rick Ransom was second with a time of 21.25 seconds. Phillip Gray was third with 21.36 seconds for:the sixty foot climb. Brandy Bradley took first place for the 200-250 pound division Withi a/time of 30.56 for the sixty foot climb. Donny ComfiVS donated $100 to the oldest and fastest climber. JFdrthe blder men, Peter Burns Sr., over 50, had a time of 9.7 seconds for the 20 foot level. Jimmy \Flo\ from Kanewakew?is given.the trophy with a time of 35.0 seconds for the 66 foot climb. Marshall Oakes had a time of 27.23 seconds for the forty foot level. Marshall climbed the face of the column, tht : most difficult to do. Joe R. Each girl received a gojf shirt with the '1st Annual Column Climb 1985' printed on it The first pme was a trophy and a Carhart bib overhaul and a sheep lined jacket and hood. Se- cond prfate consisted of a trophy and a Carhart sheep lined jacket and hood. Third prize was a trophy and a jean vest. Pete Jlarns said, \I will have a rod tying contest where the com- petitors; will.tle 100 rods This will be for the men who don't climb and it will be in the near future. Next year the column «limb proceeds will go to some other worthy cause. There were a lot of braggcrs out there that said they would climb, and they never snowed up.\ \ \ \\ Mohawk band donated their playing time playing for six hours on Saturday free of jneittbef was given a golf shirt.
