Bomarc Missile ' s Test Is Complete Success RnMARr' missi les are securel y fastene d DVy iVl/TLi vV^ to carriers to p rot ec t their deli - cate electroni c instruments. Th is picture was taken at an Air Defense Missile Squadro n similar to one at Suffolk County Air Force Base. All such missiles have built-in safety features to prevent their accidental firing. Suffolk Base Has Missile: OM ^^^MMMMM^MIMWMMWIMaMHMiWiHHlMBMHMnaniMMMMMHaMMMaM A missile-age milestone was reached recently when units of the Air Defense Command launched a Bomarc-A missile against a jet drone simulating an enemy target headed toward the south- eastern coast of the United States. The launch marked the first operational exercise of the Bomarc Semi-Automatic Ground Environ- ment (SAGE) system by the Air Defense Command. The target, a ground controlled target drone QB-47 , was hit and destroyed as it S7>e d toward the Gulf Coast at a speed in excess of 500 miles per hou r. Coastal radar stations of the Montgomery Air Defense Sector fed continuous target information into a huge com puter at the Mont- gomery SAGE Direction Center , Montgomery, Alabama , where it was monitored by an Air Force control crew at Santa Rosa Is- land , Fort Walton Beach , Florida. A launch crew of the 4751st Air- Defense Wing (missile), Huriburt AFB , Fla., had made final pre- parations days prior to the launch of the 47-foot-long IM-99A ground to air missile. On command from a weapons controller at the Montgomery SAGE center, the electronic launch mechanism started the Bomarc ' s booster rocket engine which lifted it off the launching pad and sent it on its way to an area of inter- cept 150 miles from Santa Rosa Island. Afte r the initial boost ,/ /the Bomarc ' s ramjet en gines start- - ed up and propelled the missile to cruising altitude and on to the area of attack. Brigadier General Gladwyn E. Pinkston , Commander of the Mont- gomery Air Defense Sector , said the mission was comp letel y suc- cessfu l and was one of a series of exercises conducted by the Air Defense Command and designed to peak effectiveness of crews which protect the United States agains t aggression. The Bomarc missile , like all def ense missiles now in use , has built-in safety feautures which prevent their accidental firing. It requires a series of definite opera- tions to fire the missile. Stationed at Suffolk County Air Force Base is the Sixth Air De- fense Missile Squadron equipped with the Bomarc missile. The missiles are housed on a constant combat ready basis in individual concrete and steel launcher shel- ters. Upon, receiving the alert signal the shelter roof slides back and the Bomarc is raised on its erec- tor arm to its vertical launching position. The erector then falls away and the missile is fi red . The entire process is carried out auto- matically in less than two minutes. The missile squadron and Suffolk County Air Force Base are pai-t of the Air Defens e Command and the SAGE defense system. No practice firings of the Bomarc missile are contemp lated from the local air base. SWEZEY FUEL CO. t ^^^ m ^ < ^ I COAL and FUEL OIL ^^ ^^Zm ^ GRover 5-02 70 ^@TW 00 ^ RIDER AVENUE and L. I. R.
