Say No Demotion For Policemen In Exam Case RIVERHEAD — Supreme Court Justice Fred J. Munder , last Thursday ruled that the State Civil Sei*vice Commission , tempor- arily at least , cannot reduce in rank some 30 Suffolk police offi- cers , whose test examinations were allegedly fraudulent or altered. Judge Munder , in halting the state , tossed out their petition, which had asked for dismissal of the court action filed by the o ffi - cers. Last November , Judge Munder heard arguments from attorneys Harold Herzstein and Leonard Wexler , representing the police- men. The State Civil Service Com - mission , at the time asked the court action be dismissed , contend- ing the officers had no righ t to ap- peal unless they were demoted. The probe of alleged police exam frauds , initiated b y the sta te last year , has led to the indict- ment of three policemen on charges of* perjury, and of Thomas A. Ca- landrillo of Huntington , former executive secretary of the Suffolk Civil Service Commission. It has never been alleged that the police themselves participated in aii y exam changes. Judge Munder noted this and stated the policemen could not be demoted. \Punishment for a fraud- ulent or sham examination may not be visited on innocent ap- pointees , \ he said. He ruled the police were proceeding properly in their action to halt the State Civil Service. Coin mission , and dismiss- ed the state ' s petition ' , - -allowing them 20 days lead to answer. - Mr. Wexler hailed the decision as \the first step toward finall y victory for the police officers. \ Day of Prayer On World-Wide Basis on Feb . 17 The seventy-fifth World Day of Prayer will be observed this year at the Methodist Church , South Ocean Avenue , at 2 p. m. Variety Show Set Feb. 10 , 11 at Set-on By George llorst We had another house fire this past week and as was the ca.se of the past t\\ , o before , this am* . also occurred when no one was at home. Again the fire had ma.de substantial progr-ss before it was discovered and the alarm turned in. Our trucks met the four and five foot snow drifts that were encountered and plowed through with the help of tire chains which are put on the tires of the trucks and are kept on during the type of weather we are hav- ing now. The main roads may be wide open but the going- in re- mote areas of our district is still plenty rough and without chains we could not get throug h. Upon the arrival of the fire- men the fire was quickl y broug ht under control in spite of deep snow which hampered every move- ment. Extensive damage to the in- terior of the house was reported and again the fire burned unde- tected for some time before dis- covery. Fire does not need any- one to watch it , to do its damage. A party was held at our fire- house last Saturday night. It was a chance for the newer members to become acquainted with some of the older members who do not come around as often as they used to. About 80 people enjoyed a festive evening and only one overcoat got misplaced , but was quickly tracked down the next day. Congrats are in order from us to the Van Guard Hose Company on the completion of 70 years of faithful service to the community of Patchogue. Here ' s hop ing you r members keep up their work for many times that number. Since the three house fires that have occurred in our district since the start of the new ye:;r have occurred while no one was pre- sent in the house , it seems it would be only common ><>v. . ^- to point out to peop le that they should check over their homes he- ft) re leaving for any length of time. A Strang'\ ' smell , or a warm wall or a funny sound to your heating unit should be checked and your heating unit needs extra at- tention now when demands on it are extremely heavy.
