MEDFORD FIRE DEPT. By GEORGE W. HORST We had our first brush fire of the year last week. This fire was in the woods , quite a way off the road. Conditions weren 't just right for brush fires at this time of the year —so , it is a thing that makes us wonder. We have a unit in our fh*e de- partment that performs a very im- portant job ; and by this unit doing its job it makes firefightng some- what safer. This unit is the fire police. Their job is to aid the firemen and to help and guard the public safety. They help firemen going to the firehouse to answe r an alarm by directing traffic at intersections. They also aid the fire trucks going to a fire the same way. They keep spectators back a safe distance away from a fire , so th ey do not get in the way of the working fire- men and also to protect them from any falling debris , embers , etc., that _ ?oes »with many fires. They also ififedt 8nd detotrr traffic when the need occurs. The fire police in our department operate under the chief. He ap- points the officers. The headman of our fire police is the captain of fire police , Fred Bachteler. He sees that the chief' s orders are carried out by the men. These men fight fires also. When additional manpower is needed at a fire they pitch in and help.
