Lab Man Joins Safety Club UPTON—Michael Declemente of East Islip became the first Brookhaven National Laboratory employe to join the Scarab Club. This club , sponsored by safety shoe manufacturers , is made up of persons who liav averted serious injury to their toes and feet through the wearing of steed-capped safety shoes. Mr. 1 fee loin elite ' s escape from injury occurred in November when a heavy metal roller fell from a machine on which he was work- ing and struck , end-on , the cap of his shoe . H e sustained a slight bruise onl y and the attending laboratory physician was convinced that a severe injury would have resulted but for his safety shoe. In brief ceremonies at the laboratory December 14 a club membershi p certificate and pin were presented to Mr. Declem- ente by his supervisor , Dr. Ral ph P. Shutt , head of the Bubble Chamber Croup at Hrookhaven National laboratory. The laboratory issues over 1 , 800 pairs of safety shoes each year to those employes whose work exposes them to toe haz- ards. These hazards range from the heavy industrial type encoun- tered by maintenance personnel to the kind which is presented by the handling of lead bricks used in radiation shielding. This foot protection program is only one aspect of the laboratory ' s intensive safety effort , which recently produced a record of over 1 , 750 ,000 accident-free man-hours.
