Irving Pratt of Oyster Bay, president , announced this week. The committee, which has infor- mation centers in Garden City and Patchojjue was formed four years ajro. New Garden City offices at 350 Old Country Road will he opened this week. The committee works directly with the alcoholic , his family, his employer and the courts to direct him to the help best suited for his particular case. It is an af- filiate of the National Council on Alcoholism of which R. Brinkley Smithors of Mill Neck is the pre- sident. \Alcoholism is a progressive illness characterized by uncontrol- led drinking: of alocholic bever- ages , \ Mrs. Pratt said in telling of her committee ' s work. \Only in the past 10 years has it been recognized as an illness. And even now there are still millions of victims who must go on being sick and stigmatized because al- coholics are still considered by the uninformed to be men and women lacking in character , victims of their own excesses and lack of will power , \ she said. \We have three major goals: Prevention and detection of alco- holism through education ; rehabil- itation and the mobilization of ex- isting community services and re- sources to meet these first two aims. \ Mrs. Pratt said. This year all funds raised in Suffolk will go entirely toward the operation of the Patchogue office. Contributions may be sent to the Nassau office in Garden City or the Suffolk office at 5 Lake Street , Patchogue. W. Kingsland Macy, Jr., is first vice president; William L. Eck , second vice president; Mrs. Dudley Bird , secretary, and James S. Lunn , treasurer. George W. McCarthy is executive director for Nassau and Charles K. Post , director for Suf- folk.
