ACTION The actions of men are the best interpreters of their thoughts. —lohn Locke BELLPORT — The first bi g fire in many years in Bell port ' s business district occurred at 12:55 a.m. last Thursday at the Bell port Fish Market on Main Street. Over GO firemen rushed to an- swor the alarm and found a rag- ing fire on the east side of the interior of the building. The Fire Department received high praise for its excellent job in preventing the fire from spread- ing to adjoining buildings. Fire Chief John Later attributed the cause of the fire to electrical equi p- ment which was located on the east side of the market. The esti- mated damage is approximately $10 , 000. Paul Groh , owner of the mar- ket , and his famil y had recently moved out of the apartment over the fish market. Had thev still been living there , they might have been trapped , as their onl y means of escape was the stairway, which was aflame. For the present Mr. Groh is carrying in his business around the corner on Bellport Lane, where he will be located un- til the burned out market is re- p laced. The firemen were again called at 5:15 p. m. Monday to New Jevsey Avenue where a high-power electric wire had snapped and dropped to the street below , start- ing a bi g b!aze which set fire to a nearby tree and short-circuited the siren. It was then necessary to ring a bell to call the firemen. Fire Chief Later comp limented the Patchogue Electric Light Com- pany on its quick response to an emergency call which possibl y saved lives and prevented further damage to property. TeL BElIport 7-0860 T Rezone Plea For Station Road Site Before Bd. BELLPORT — Another petition for a change of zone to \Business E\ has been presented to the Bell- port Village Board. Read to the board at its monthly meeting Mon- day night , it is the request of Rob- ert H. Lyons , Jr., and Elizabeth Jeannette Lyons of 19 Station Road for a change from \Residen- tial D\ on property adjoining their home and business property on Station Road. The petition stated that the pur- pose of the request is to enable the applicant to establish and con- duct on the premises a three-fam- ily dwelling and/or offices , and it is not planned to make any major alterations to the buildings , but to use them in their present exist- ing condition. The petition was re- ferred to the planning board and no date set for a public hearing. Meanwhile , no decision was made by the board on the petition of the Budrick Rea l ty Company for a change of zone from \Residential C\ to \Business E\ on a portion of the former Osborn property on South Country Road , the board de- ciding to hold a special meeting for this purpose later in the week. A resolution was adopted de- claring every building on the W yandotte Hotel property a fire hazard , unfit for human habita- tion, offensive to the health and welfare of the village and its in- habitants and unsafe and danger- ous. A notice was to be sent to the owners , ordering them to make the buildings safe or to have them removed no later than 10 days af- ter service of the notice and in case of failure to do so , the vil- lage shall apply at a special term of the Supreme Court for an order determining the buildings to be public nuisances and directing their repair or removal. Another resolution passed pro- vides that all bills to be audited must be presented no later than 4 p. m. of the Wednesday preceding the board meeting, the second Mon- day of each month , all bills to be sworn to before a notary public. It was voted to enforce the over- night parking ordinance , prohibit- ing parking on the streets between 3 a. m. and <> p. m., and to write several owners of hedges that are too high at intersections. The Woman ' s Auxiliary of Brookhaven Memorial Hospital was granted permission to hold a barbecue at the bathing beach September •). At the public hearing that pre- ceded the regular meeting, to adopt an amendment to the ordin- ances providing for a speed limit not in excess of 15 miles an hour for motor vehicles and motorcy- cles , except ambulances , fire vehi- cles or police vehicles on emer- gency trip.s , on Bell port Lane south of Shore Drive and on the village dock , Lispenard Suydam was the only resident who appeared to speak about the matter. He recom- mended a reduced speed limit on the whole of Bellport Lane. The hoard did not take any action after the hearing, pending its special meeting sometime this week. Petition Prompts School Bus Transportation Vote Sept. 13 HS Site Vote Same Day: - ' ' - l * BELLPORT—Bus trans- portation for elementary school children living a half mile from school and for hi g h school students living a mile away in Centra l School D istrict 4 , the same as provided last year , was requested in a petition con- taining approximatel y 1 , 500 names of parents presented to the Boa rd of Education at its meeting Monday night. Transportation had been cur- tailed as a result of a vote at the annual meeting in May, when vot- ers voted 1(13-6 to provide trans- ¦ portation only for elementary school children living a mile from school and high school students a mile and a half distance, in order to effect a s . aving of about $18 , 000 in the budget. The petition requested a special meeting for a vote on extended transportation and since it con- tained sufficient names which , ac- cording to state law , requires the board to hold a special meeting of the district , the date of Septem- ber 13 was set for a vote. Earlier , the board had scheduled Septem- ber 19 for a vote on the purchase of a high school site , but after be- ing presented with the petition for a special meeting, decided to ad- vance the previously scheduled date and ask the voters to vote on the two propositions at the same time. Registration was set for September (5. A board spokesman said this week that if the additional trans- portation is voted it will mean an increase in the tax rate of IS cents per .flOO of assessed valua- tion , with the tax rate now esti- mated to be $11.08 for 1960-G1.
