Mr. Gay was quoted as saying that hundreds of building per- mits issued in the latter part of 1958 and throughout 1959 were not posted in the assessment rolls. According to the release Mr. Gay contended that in one development \ containing scores of homes in the $10 , 000-$14 ,000 bracket , each building and plot carried iden- tical assessed valuations totalling $1 , 800 , even though the State current equalization rate for Brookhaven Town up to now has been set at 28 per cent. \ Mr. Gay was quoted in the re- lease as commending the recent authorization from Albany for ap- pointment of three additional deputy assessors , bringing the town ' s total deputies to eight. Mr. Gay was quoted as charging that the administrations of Super- visors Philipp Hattemer and Percy Raynor failed to recognize the need of enlarging the asses- sors ' staff. No new deputies have been appointed by the board at present. Lange ' s Letter Building Inspector Emil Lange wrote to the board the Middle Is- land operation of Preferred Trans- mix Company, Inc. of Hicksville, had been halted in early April because the firm had failed to ob- tain a permit to operate a sand and gravel pit. Mr. Lange said the firm has now filed app lica- tions for a . permit. On Tuesday the board received a letter from Thomas R. Bayles of Middle Island , charg ing the sand and gravel company had \ practicall y destroyed\ the Miller Place-Middle Island Road on which it is located. Mr. Bayles said the company had caused holes in the road surface. He called upon the town to \ oil and improve \ the stretch of road near the firm. In further action before the town board Councilman Howard Rowland recommended the board appoint an attorney to look into the feasibility of an ordinance re- quiring owners of vacant lots to keep the property clear of trash or be subject to a fine. Super- visor August Stout , Jr. , appointed Patchogue Attorney Norman F. Lechtrecker to study the matter. The board reecived and referred to the Planning Board the peti- tions of Mrs. Grace T. Daniels of Center Moriches for a zoning change fro m C residence to J-l business for properly in School Disti ict ' ¦ ' ¦ ' on the north side of Moiitauk Highway which is hound- ed on the east by Railroad Ave- nue and on the west b y the prop- erty of Fred Lindebaiid; the peti- tion of M' \ red Goldhirsch for a zoning change from 1! residence to C residence for properl y in South Setauket on Port .lolYerson-Nes- consof Road and bounded on the south by llawkin ' s Path , and the petiti on of Lig hthouse Reach Corp- oration of Port.
