River- head Supervisor William .!. • Eeon- arrl was absent from the meeting. The Civil Service Commission had earlier announced that McCann Associates of Philadelphia , Civil Service consultants , would be hired to conduct the examination , scheduled for June IS. A spokesman for the commis- sion said about H , 700 men were expected to apply to take the examination. There are -10 patrol- men ' s positions open for the county and in town and village departments. The spokesman noted that all app lying for the test must pay a $4 filing fee , according to law , which would return over $14 , 000 to Suffolk. Applications for the examination and any further information will not be available until after May 2 , the spokesman said. 472 Shot (in Arm) Ai. Patchogue Clinic The Salk Vaccine clinic held Saturday at the Bay Avenue School , Patchogue , proved to be an outstanding success. Under the sponsorshi p of the Patchogue Rotary Club , it resulted in no less than 472 persons receiving polio innocu- lations. Broken down , the figures reveal that 113 obtained first shots , 8t> re- ceived second shots , while 2~' .i obtained third and final shots, County Will Acquire Hauppauge Parkland RIVERHEAD—A new link was added Monday to the growing chain of county parks as the Board of Supervisors approved purchase of 21 acres of wooded land at the head of the Nisseuuogue River in Hauppauge. A $70 , 000 bond issue was authorized to cover the agreed- upon price of $t>3 , 000 and the incidental expenses of the acquisi- tion. Smithtown Supervisor Robert A. Brady said the property, which fronts on Veterans Memorial High- way and is located a short distance east of the 66-acre county center at Hauppauge , is an ideal natural park. Several firms have been inte rested in developing the par- cel , which is owned by the Jurgens brothers of Commack. A short distance to the east is a 38-acre tract acquired by Smith- town for park purposes several years ago. The county may eventually recover 75 per cent of its investment under the state wet- lands program , Mr. Brad y de- clared. The members of the post had also conducted an essay contest in the surrounding elementary schools including Yaphank , West Middle Island, Ridge , Cora m and Trernont Avenue School , Medford . Winners who were presented with a medal included : Eleanor Malk- mas , Yap hank; Jack Salomone. West Middle Island; Barry Jack- son , Coram; Rita Pukowski , Ridge ; and Kathy Tobitsch , Medford. The best of these five winners was Kathy Tobitsch. She received an additional award of a United States Savings Bond. The title of the essay was \My Debt To the Declaration of Independence. \ and Kathy read her contribution. Mrs. Ann Cullum, honorary past department president , was recog- nized , along with the past presi- dents and commanders of the aux- iliary and post and a number of distinguished guests. The retiring president received a past president' s pin , and Com- mander Dittmeier , received a past commander ' s badge. He was re- elected to serve another term. Dancing -and a buffe t supper followed. River Avenue PTA Elects Toni g ht ; Hear Facts on May 4 Vote The River Avenue School Parent- Teacher Association will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight. Parents are requested to be at the school by 7:. 'i0 p. m. in order to visit their child' s classroom to view work displays and to discuss any problem with the teacher. At 8 p. m., a bell will ring signifying the beginning of the meeting in the cafeteria. John Chester and Frank Zanazzi will be piesent to represent the Board of Education. They will discuss the propositions to be voted on and will also be glad to answer any questions the parents may have. Thirty members attended and four new members were admitted to the club. Plants , which were presented at the first meeting to each resident who is a member , were examined and found to be doing well under their care. Mrs. Hill has now given them each a rooted cutting so that they mi g ht have young plantlets by the next meeting. After the meeting Mrs. Hill presented a large decorated cake to celebrate the founding of the club. Mrs . Hazel Spence , social director of the home , served this with punch.
