The Hot Corner BY JOHN T. (JACK ) PALACE Patchogue Recreat i on D i r e ctor VOLLEY BALL — Wo had convinced ourselves that volley- ball was a dead sport in PaU-hogue. Then in the Inst week we heard requests for the activity. When we tirst came on the scene a few vears bade, volley ball was a bi g summer activity with play at the ' Shore-front pack. Then came SloBnll . For one year , volley- bail l-\>ld its own against SleHall , hut onl y for one year. Then we offered volleyball indoors during the cold months . And it went over big. We had some pretty good teams , too . such as the Sabre club , the Postollice. Lobolls , Quarterback club , Slo- Pokes. Bayport Bombers and the Van (luards. Thi' start of the Amvet Bowling leagues took their tolls. Now we seem to lie left with the Sabre club , tne I' oslotnee. tne j Morones , me l. enoveis ami perhaps , the Pythians. Both the SloPokes and j ' osior.j ce teams have formally entered by for- warding rosters . Verbally, the Sabre club and Pythians have said they will play. So . we await definite word from these two teams . * * * * MIDGET BASKETBALL — Saturday morn- inns are being generated with much basketball interest. Youngsters are meeting at local, schools , receiving instruction and p lay ing basketball games. Sponsors are forwarding their checks for the uniforms. The uniform colors have been picked for each team and should be arriving lie- fore long. We can still use some adult ass istance , Haaeaaasgt i -mi mtHMrnwi Jack Palace though. If the reader has an occasional Saturday morning free to teach basketball to some eager boys , how about contacting the writer? * * * * BITS BEGGED 'N BORROWED — Several basketball coaches in the area feel tha.t Patchogue should field a pretty good basketball team . . . Last year ' s mainstays , Ray Weeks, Dick Schwinge , and a youngster named Oriz will be back . . . Dick Mauer , as a new addition to Blue Point Rec in the PUD basketball Oldtimer league , could prove to be a big difference . . . Incidentally, schedules appear in this paper weekly, and have been forwarded to the local radio stations so that they may be announced . . . Tomorrow night is the BIG night of the St. Francis Minstrel in which so many local sports notables are participating. Having stellar roles in the show are comics , George Hardman and Jerry Davis , and featured soloist , John Paracic . . . Hearing Pavacic sing is worth the price of admis- sion alone . . . Joe Fusaro , who performed with Seton Hall two years back , is seeing considerabl e action with Holy Cross as a guard and linebacker . . . Ex-Setonite Mike Burdian , last year ' s star , is playing varsity football under Otto Graham at New London . . . Al Chiuchiolo of George ' s TV wants to be considered as a SIoBall sponsor . . . Big football discussion at the Van Guards last week. Unanswered questions: Who was QB before Conerly? Who was in (he back-field wifh Len Eshmont of the Dodgers ? . . . Red Raiders claim that Copiague is one of the roughest teams they have played with accent on personal fouls . . . And Port Jeff' s rout of Amityville makes , the Turkey day game a complete farce . . . On Thanksgiving, Joe Mannino ' s Ramlets play a game. * * * * HOOP ACTION — What with school being closed last Wed- nesday, the Youngster league was unable to get in a night of activity. However , the Oldtimers continue to roll on with two teams still in the undefeated rank. Rose Gems and Swan Cleaners meet this week, meaning that one will fall. Pelco nipped Four Seasons last week in a thriller , 35- \\ . the winning basket coming in the closing seconds . Swan downed Blue Point Rec , 33 to 21 , and Rose trimmed Niemeyer Signs , 48 to 23. SETON HALL HAS just completed a more than satis- factory season with seven wins following an opening loss to Fordham Prep. Coach Henry Read also nailed another cham- pionship banner to the Roe Blvd. gym wall. Perhaps Read got a little more personal pleasure from beating Brooklyn Prep last week than he did winning the championship. You know , country cousin whipping the cit y slickers. Be as it may, all efforts are now turned toward basketball , with Bob Cooney handling the reins. November 16 was the accepted starting date for all schools to commence basketball practice. Down the road a piece . Joe A' gbstinello is looking over a 1-3-3 season , with Port to come . Had the Red Raiders beti; able to garner just one more point in three contests , the season would have been highly- successful . . . However , overlapping seasons has Patchogue basketball coach Cliff Ross putting his boys through the paces without the football p layers. Probably the big man in Ross ' plans still playing football is Dick Schwinge. Unfortunately, the schedule being what it is. Patchogue will be playing league games before the gridders are in shape. * * * * HUNTING LESSONS — some time brick , we mentioned that the Four Sisters Community center would be the site for classes for teenagers seeking a. hunting license. Due to shortage of forms , the classes were held off until their arrival. Dick Searles , the instructor , said the forms have arrived ' and that the first class will be at 7:30 p. m. tomorrow, at the Four Sisters Com- munity center. All teenagers interested may attend. There will be no charge . 1 959 FOOTBALL QUEEN • „fi t 2Sf r£SS buss on cheek from Phil Orosz , vice president of Patchogue Var- sity club. Commiftee Doings : FALL FASHION SHOW — When Pete Poulos visited the (Jordan Heights section a year or two ago to work with the com- munity citizens in setting up their recreation association , he prob- abl y had no idea that this particular group would b' .ossom into one of the hardct working organizations here in the township. The citizens from the heights have been going all out to give their community the finest recreation program possible and their con- scientious etforls have certainl y reaped a profitable harvest of results. Al Seeley, the association president , has now advised us that trie communit y will stage a rail fashion show and Cocktail Sip to be held at the Fvaiis Holiday Inn on Boy le road , Selden . November 20 between •1 and 7 p. m. The Helen Ann Sandeis Shop i p Patchogue is cooperating with the Gordon Height;- ; group in furnishing the various fashions which are to be displayed by some eig ht attractive young ladies , all of whom will represent the different sections of the town. An added attraction at the affair will be the presence of the .Margaret Fonville Trio , which will be on hand to supp l y the musical buck- ground. The popular trio , in addition to its leader , Miss Fonville at the piano , is made up of a couple of boys whoso names not too long ago were often found in the sports pages of this ^mnsssmam^j ^ Win Olms and other papers here in Suffolk. Wo refer to Bill y Sells of Seiauket. a former track great at Port Jefferson , and Jim Lee. one of the finest basketball stars ever to come out of PHS. Billy will be on the drums while Jimmy p lays the electric bass guitar. Anyone interested in securing tickets for the affair can do so by contacting Seelev in the Gordon Heights area or by calling Louise Hall at SElden 2-5400 or Wilson Swinton at SElden 2-5681. They will be happy to give you additional information and let you know whom to contact to secure your ticket. Proceeds received from the affair will go toward the youth recreation movement in the Gordon Heights community. SCHOLASTIC GREAT — We wonder how many of our readers had the opportunity to see the high school TV game of the week on Channel 7 last Saturdav . We also wonder of •thos e who did how many will agree with us that young Ronnie Bliev of the Tilden 11 was just about the most electrifying halfback that they have ever seen. If ever there was a one- man ball club this young fi-1 , 195-pound human steam roller is it. His runs of 97 , 87 and 47 yard s to score all of his team ' s touchdowns and his two dashes around the ends to account for the four points after touchdown , plus his tremendous defensive exhibition will no doubt keep him busy during the coming months considering scholarshi p offers from colleges throughout the country. For those of you who missed this truly terrific youngster , who we feel is a scholastic edition of the great Jim Brown, we would like fo recommend that you tune in to Channel 7 this Saturday for as of this writing arrangements were in the process to televise the Tilden.New Dorp game on November 21 for the PSAL City championship. * * * * BRIGHT HORIZON — When Ed Brigh t took over the reins as athletic director of the Patchogue school system we knew then <inrl there that PHS was about to start its rocky climb up the bidder to a place in the football snn. The won and Inst record this season comp iled by the Red Raiders , we will admit , is nothing to write homo about. Nevertheless , we have noticed a marked improvement in the team ' s overall performance and are now more convinced than ever before that the tide has turned in the right direction. We thoinrht that the Red and Black' s unset win ove r Snvville a few weeks ago was one of the team ' s best games in •Uiite some time and feel confident that before tori many more seasons come and go Patchogue High will once again be the team to beat. EQUIPMENT ROUND-UP — Poulos . who must always prenare a season abend for the season soon to follow , is busy taking inventory of the summer recreation equipment. For this reason if (here is nnv time which still has not turned in its enninment Pete would appreciate hearing fro m you. Call him at SElden 2-66R5 and he will sec to it that the equipment is picked up. * * * * REMINDER — Tom NewVinm . committee chairman for the appreciation dinner to be held for Poulos, would like to remind all of Pete ' s friends that if thev still haven 't secured their tickets for the dinner-dance to be held December 5, to do so without delay. For those of you living in Patchocue , contact Tom and he will fell von whom to see to secure your ducats. If you live out of the Pafchoguo area contact the recreation director in your area (Joe Wevnund in the Moriches Bay area. Rill Pavson in ' the mid-island section and Mike Caraftis on the North Shore).
