Patchogue Woman ' s Club Plans Its Fifth Charity Ball Co-Chairmen Mrs. Justu s Roe , Mrs. Alden Olsson and Mrs. Franklyn Overton with their committees are busil y working on last minute details for the fifth annual Charity Ball of the Woman ' s Club of Patchogue , to be held November 28 , at the Great Kiver Country club , Great River. Dancing will be from 10 p. m. - 2 a. m. to the Society orchestra under th>? direction of Fred Kell y. Mr. Kelly and his group enjoyed much popularity during the sum- mer at Herb McCarthy ' s Bowden Square in Southampton . The club , having instituted the dance piogra m as part of its affair this year , are very excited and pleased with the recep tion it has received. In it will be listed the many patrons and sponsors of Woman ' s club. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of a $100 cash award. Proceeds from this annual affair wih go toward the club ' s many charities , the Brookhaven Memo- rial hosp ital and largel y toward the scholarshi p fund for a deserv- ing high school girl graduate . Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Thorn of 26 Harris street were pleasantly surprised Saturday night at a party held in honor of their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. The affair was held at the Veter- ans of Foreign Wars hall on Edwards street. The hall was de- corated in autumn leaves , and white streamers cascaded from the wall to the guests-of-honor ' s table. In front of the table was a large four-tiered wedding cake p laced on a small table decorated with white wedding bells. Late r in the even- ing a buffet supper was served. They will perform 14 concerts in central New York and Metropolitan areas. HONORED RECENTLY ^ \Zt^ ' ^Z feted at a surprise party in honor of their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary. The party was given October 24 in the Amvets clubhouse , Patchogue , by their children , Mr. and Mrs. Russell Schrage , Donald Schrage and Mr . and Mrs. Willia m C. Schrage. About 50 guests attended and a buffet dinner was served. The hall was beautifull y decorated. Among the many lovely gifts was a money tree. Panel Appraises Various Facet s Of School Life Thought-urovoking reports and suggestions presented by members of the Medford Avenue Pa rent- Teacher association provided a stimulating evening at their reg- ular meeting last Thursday night , held in the auditorium of the school . The theme , \Praise and Ap- praise Your School\ , relating to American Education week , was developed oy the PTA into a panel discussion evaluating the many facets of school life requir- ing change , development and rein- terpretation by the parents , teach- ers , and the board of education. The panel was manned by John Chester , member of the board of education; Ben Tabatchnik , princi- pal ; Mrs Hela DeWitt , staff psy- chologist; and Miss Corinne Sull- ivan , Mrs. Grace Wickham , Law- rence Hummel , Eugene Lisandrel- lo , and Joseph Chichello , teachers at the Medford Avenue school. The moderator was Mrs. Raymond Kur- shner. Mrs. Norman Schwartz present- ed her op inions concerning the presentation of foreign languages in elementary school. She asked for a rea-vakening of interest in in penmanship, and longer daily hours in which to encom- pass more fully a more comp lete cultural program. Mrs. Douglas Daniels asked that a complete reexamination of the current report card be made , pre- sented arguments for a reappraisal of the symbols now in use , and asked for a turn to the numerical system in grading. Her comments were supplemented by views given by Mrs. John McCafferty and Burghardt Turner. Mrs . Carl Okun , president of the Medford Avenue PTA , explain- ed that a committee is presently reevaluating report cards. Mrs. Aaron R i m 1 a n d asked about split sessions , and Mr. Ches- ter , in turn , explained the p lans of the proposed Barton avenue school and current bus service problems. Mrs. Okun announced that the Sixth grade trip is not included in the budget for the current year . Hopes were expressed that some- one would fill the post of ways and means , so that this project could be financed bv the efforts of the PTA. Mr. Tabatchnik ex- plained that there would be a tri p at any ra te , and the estimated cost to each child would be about $3. Baranec Will Speak To Bay Avenue PTA Having as its theme this month , \The Fruit of the Earth , \ the Buy Avenue Parent-Teacher association will present a varied program. George A. Baranec , director of the County Children ' s shelter in Hauppauge , will speak on the many aspects of this problem at the next PTA meeting, Tuesday. His talk will cover the primary function of the children ' s shelter , the types of children which are admitted , the families from which they come , the causes of their having none \ wrong, \' and the measures which might have been taken to prevent many of these unfortunate situations. During buffet refreshments , par- ents will have an opportunity to see the results of the creative art program in the s-chools in a special display arranged by Robert Kellar. As the final \fruit ' ' there will be the eh'Iaivn—movies of the re- cent Halloween parade will be run off. The table decorations which will follow the thought of the evening will be made by the fourth grade children.
