Girl Scouts Stage Americana Pageant At Camp Edey Site BAYPORT — An Americana pageant was staged at Girl Scout Camp Edey ' s Freedom circle Sat- urday just before sunset near the Bayport lake with every one of the 100 campers participating. The inaugural flying of the new ID-starred flag heralded the Four- th for these Girl Scouts of Nassau and Suffolk counties. Nine epi- sodes of United Sta te s history were depicted by the girls dressed in their impromptu , but imagi- native costumes created by them from the woods and theatrical trunks at Camp Edey. Following the seriously present- ed Americana pageant there was a symbolic burning of the old flag which was draped over a tier of wood on a large float in the middle of the Big Dipper , the largest lake here. Flaming torches moved magically through the water to light this tier with Camp Edey ' s best swimmers supporting these silently and effectively. On Sunday water carnival was followed by an outdoor smorgas- bord supper. The holiday weekend ended with a solemn inspirational service per- formed by the Woodsman unit us- ing international understanding as its theme. Water Fountains Planned for Two Town Beaches The Brookhaven Town trustees announced this week that they plan to install drinking fountains at two of their batning beaches in order to provide extended ser- vices lor tne users. Tne pian can- for the installation of wells at West Meadow beach and Cedai beach before the end of this sea- son. The town trustees have been negotiating with the West Meadow Beach Property Owners association for several years, in a letter re- ceived from the association this week the possibility of connecting the existing water service that is owned and controlled by the West Meadow association was definitely denied. The association contends that to allow the town to purchase water for the West Meadow beach users would mean they would have to change the status of the asso- ciation and come under the control of the Public Service commission The association further claims that this would necessitate the ex- pending of considerable money which they do not desire to do a' this time. All possibilities having been explored for obtaining a source of water , the only cou rse left open to the town is the in- stallation of their own well to provide the needed water. The new well at West Meadow will be installed by town personnel and will mean the town will only need to expend additional money for material to be used. The plan is to drive a shallow well similai to ones*existing on adjoining pro- perty, which have the ability to provide clear fresh water. The well at Cedar Beach , how- ever , must be a deep well and. therefore , bids will be taken and the installation made by a private corporation. It is estimated that the well at Cedar beach when completed will be close to 400 feet deep in order to insure a continu- ous flow of fresh water. A spokesman for the trustees , commenting on the extention oi services to the users of the beach- es stated: \The trustees are pro- viding these new wells so that a high health standard can be main- tained at all of the town recrea- tion facilities. The number ol people using our parks and beach- es has increased greatly over the past few years and I am sure that the crowds will continue to get larger and the town must take steps to insure that their health and welfare is adequately provided for while using these areas. It is felt that the new wells will greatl y aid in extending comfort and health standards for our peo- p le while at the beaches. \ State Plans Two Road Extensions For Nea r Future BRIGHTWATERS—State Sen- ator Elisha T. Barrett , chairman of the senate committee on high- ways and parkways , announced this week that the state depart- ment of public works would let two sizable highway contracts foi Suffolk county August 6. Both projects involve outlays of approx- imatel y $5 , 000 , 000. One project involves a 3.98 mile section of the Sunrise Highway extension and access roads extend- ing from Flanders road in Hamp- ton Bays east to Springdale road in Shinnecock Hills. The extension will be of the present Sunrise highway four-lane design. The cost has been bid for $4 , 012 , 000. The other project concerns con- struction of a 2.16 mile two-lane section of Route 110 (Broadway) in Amityville running north to the Southern State parkway. The lanes are to be separated by a center mall.
