We hope you ' re say ing, \What on earth is a p ie party ?\ We did. We 'd heard of all kind ' s of parties but never a pie party and we had to go to San Francisco , Calif. , to hear of one. Well—as you might, guess—a pie party is a part y where they serve p ie. All kinds of the most de- lectable pies and tortes . Banana cream , custard lime with a graham cracker crust , raspberry, almond and lemon tortes. a butterscotch p ie with gingersnap crust . Of course there was apple pie with cheese, cherry pie , blueberry pie anel luscious lemon meringue pie —anei dozens of other kinels . It was a gourmet ' s paradise. One was especially intriguing to us; it was made of thin layers of pie crust, apple sauce and whip- peel cream. lt was made bv Mrs. Jonathan Arnold Barker of Vallejo . Calif., and she was nice enough to share the recipe. Commander and Mrs. Barker ami their throe s-weet daughters , who have been station- ed at Mare Island . Naval ship- ya rd, will leave later for Wash- ington , H. C , so we were glad that she bad time to send us the recipe . Apple Stack Pie . '!' -i cups homemade or canned applesauce 1 package piecrust mi\' ¦ 3 cup butler or margarine , melted Vi cup granulated sugar IV. teaspoons grated lemon rind •?' i cups heavy cream , whipped 1 — Two hours or more before serving set strainer iu bowl; pour in app lesauce; refrigerate while lie iuiel drains. 2 — Prepare p iecrust, as label directs; divide into five parts. Start heating oven to laO d-' . \i-r\\ - - . 3 — Meanwhile on floured sur- face , roll out one part of pastry . \ 8 inch round; set 8 inch layer cake pan on top of round; cut around it with knife . Place round on cookie sheet; do not prick ; drizzle on 1 tablespoon butter , t table- spoon combined sugar and cinna- mon; refrigerate 5 minutes or longer. •1 — Hake chiller! pastry 5 min- utes or until puffy and golden. Cool slightly; with bruml spatula , re- move to rack. 5 — With each of ferur remain- ing parts , repeat steps . '? and 4 (to save time , two rounds may be placed on two inverted layer cake pans and baked in same oven.) I Be sure to cool cookie sheet be- twe-en bakings . Never p lace pas- trv on a warm sheet.) ' (> — Just before serving: mix- drainer! applesauce with lemon rind. On flat p late p lace one pas- try round. T> p with one fourth of applesauce: top with second pas- trv round , t hen apple-sauce. Repeat with third anil fourth pastry rounds . Top with fifth round. Ar- range spoonfuls of cream around top edge. Serve . - immediately, cut- ting p ie like cake. Mrs .
