TUESDAF, the opening day for the races aad games ou the fair ground, turaed out unciopitious for a commencement of the sports. Comequently a postponement till Wednesday was thought advisable, upon which day the programme was taken up and is being carried out. On Wednesday morning five entries had been made ibr the three minute race, to come off in the afternoon. The weather has cleared up, the track in good condition, iu fact every- thing seems to augur that it will be il a good day for the race.\ THE shipment of potatoes from the station here to the eastern markets -this season so far has been unusually large. The remunerating price of fifty ceuts per bushel, no doubt, has been the cause of so great aa activity in the market. Up to Saturday Ed. Hacked of Bombay and Frank B. Summerfield of Fort Covington Centre had sent east eight cars each, all containing a trifle over four hundred bushels. Both gentlemen are-still buying and paying fifty cents for a good clean article of the tuber. Last week, we learn, other parties were in this neighborhood t seeking to make purchases, and succeeded in picking up quite a large quantity, also intended for the eastern markets. The price, delivered at the cars, still remains at fifty cents per bushel. THE many friends of t\\Q family of our townsman, S. E. WRIGHT, tbe energetic and popular representative of the Republican and Journal of Ogdensburg, paid thia seo- ion his usual periodical' visit last week, itopping during his Btay at the Stafford House. Whilst here he greeted THE SOK cewith a friendly call. Mr. Wright informed us that, although in another county, the publications which be repi in,t enjoy quite an-extensive patronage n many parts of Franklin county. As a reliable news an ft commercial paper we :onsider the daily Journal one of the best hat comes to our office. The well ar- nged and carefully corrected reports oi he produce (mainly butter and cheese) markets in tbe Eastern cities as well as ai he different centres in St. Lawieuce county, make it quite a desirable medium for in- brmation in that particular for dairymen and farmers all through this productive section of the country. Mr. Wrigh urther stated that just as socn as railroad communication from Ogdensburg east- ward in this direction was fairly opened he utended to come down and make a .borough canvass for the Journal, believ- it would be for the interests of busi- ness men in Ihis heretofore isolated coun- ry to subscribe for a daily paper which would thus be in a position to anticipate .he city dailies with current news am market reports at least twelve hears. Consequently we trust to greet the good natured and congenial Wright amongsi us in the near future. MESSES. GEO. & JAMES FARQUHAB, dealers in stoves and tinware, being now comfortably settled in their new quarters, and having their large stock arranged t< he very begt advantage, are enabled i shew to their numerous friends and the people of this frostier as complete an tablishment in their line as can be found in Franklin county. A casual look hrough their store yesterday convinced u' that parties wishing anything in the way of stoves could be suited there.
