East returns a tow diamond to his partner's king, and West returns a third dia- mond. It is now up to you. What do you play at tfre third trick* How do you plan to proceed' You must trump the ithird round of diamonds, since you should be worried about losing a trump trick later on You can- not afford to give away three diamond tricks and also lose a trump. You must now proceed to draw trumps in order to safeguard your eventual club tricks, K would be fatal, however, to draw trumps by laying down the three WEST A63 V9S72 • K82 + 7532 NORTH 28 A 104 • Q107 • AQJ96 EAST 4.J987 • KJ • AJ963 *84 SOUTH (D) *AKQ52 * A 10 4 3 • 54 *K10 North-South vu). East would trump the third club and lead another dia- mond to knock out your last trump. You would be unable to get back to dummy for the rest of the clubs, and you would wind up with only eight tricks. The correct way to draw trumps is to lead your low trump from your own hand and play a low trump from Hhe dummy! East can win 4he trick and re- turn a diamond, but dummy's ten of spades will protect you from ail harm. You can return to your own hand to draw the rest of the trumps, after which the clubs will eH be good. Incidentally, notice the impor- tance of preserving dummy's ten of spades. If you waste this valuable card when you are giv- ing up a trump trick, West will be able to overufif the dummy when East leads & fourth dia- mond. 'When you give up the trump trick in this hand, you must play low from both hands. Culbertson, 64, Famed Bridge Authority, Dies Brattleboro, Vt. (£>) — Ely Culbertson,, 64, who helped make the card pastime /Of bridge a na- tional rage, died while taking a •before-dinner nap last night. Death was attributed to a heart failure due to insufficient oxygen. He had been suffering from a shortness of breath condition (or several years. He became serious- ly 111 last May, but recovered. Two weeks ago he was stricken again. Members of his family said that it became so difficult for him to breathe that he had spent the last four nights sitting up. The inernationally famous au- thority on bridge devoted much of his tmie in his middle years to a world federation peace plan that began to take form when Oulbert- son was a youthful revolutionist. Cul'bertson was credited with de- veloping an effective contract bridge system. He promoted it with exhibitions, contests, lectures and books.
