Adirondack Dally Enterprise Phones News Room ——— ----------- - -------------------------- Business Office HOLDING U P FOOD PRICES A new element has been injected by the secretary of agriculture into the interesting matter of government supports to hold food prices up ill the present market. In announc ing priee-smpport purchases for a group of dried fruits, the secretary has entered a field where he has discretion as to whether or not prices should be supported. In the case of, other commodil ies which have received price support from the govern ment this year — wheat, potatoes, eggs, peanuts, tobacco, woo], and others — the price supports were ordered by < 'em cress and the Department of Agriculture was let't with no discretion regarding then]. The case of dried fruits is different. Con gress did not order the department to buy them to bolster the market, though it did authorize such action at the discretion of the secretary. The dried fruits purchase will be small in comparison with some of the other price- fcdosting programs, involving outlay of only about $30*000,000 of government funds. But since it is a choice of. the moment, rather than the fulfilm ent of a past obligation, it merits d o s e inspection. SERVICE CO-OPERATION .N e w doings and announcements in the Department of Defense speak of closer co operation among the military \Services. The civilian citizenry is likely to receive the new pronouncements without excitment, expressing if anything a desire to have a look at this co-ordination and co-operation. It has seemed to the taxpayer that the beneficial effects hoped for from the unifica tion of service command have been painfully slow in appearing. The cost of maintaining the military establishments so far has trended upward rather than downward under the new scheme of things, and there have been few evidences that the national defense is become ing more effective. W hatever were the original hopes, it is now clear that the first unification act has instituted no more than a transition period from the old conception of the functions of t-he-sowives toward a new theory of a single, integrated defensive system. Further congres sional action will be needed to achieve such a system. Meanwhile the interests and safety of the nation will be best served i f the three services bend earnest effort toward the closest possible •o-operation within the framework mg legislation. W hittling, that old American custom, is coming into its own.
