(Special to this Dally En&rprlse) MONTREAL, P. Q Sept. 1— « Last season, the right Winger Allan Leonard, 19-year4tfd former ( played opposite his former team- xnember of the Lake Piadd, N.Y. Roamers hockey team, met a tragic death Saturday afternoon when he was drowned while swimming with friends at Clarae City, Que. More familiarly known as “A1” to the many hockey fans in the Lake Plaeid-Saranae Lake area,' Leonard was spending the sum mer with his family at the pulp- and-paper city abqut 300 miles north of Quebec City. It was reported that Leonard's body was recovered almost in- j stantly after his friends discover-: his disappearance beneath the surface of the water. Leonard, whom hockey scouts had labelled as having a prom ising cafeer, played wing with the Lake Placid Roamers during the 1946-47 season. A high scorer for the team, he later tried out for mates as a member of both the Verdun Cyclones and the Army Spartans. At the close-of the year, his hockey contract was purchas ed from the N.Y. Rangers by the Montreal Canadians. The fast skating winger, who was especially adept in the art of stick handling, first attracted the attention of Alcide Herbert, a Ranger scout. , He was one of the leading soor- £rs in the Junior Amateur Hock ey association and won the lea gue scoring title while playing with the Spartans in the Montre al Hockey league. • Funeral services were conduct ed yesterday morning and burial took place in his native Clarke City. Besides his parents, he is survived by lour brothers and four sisters. ; k n o w n ; ja g e b Syracuse to Conduct Grid Clinic Saturday For Northern League PAUL SMITHS, Sept. 1—The first annual Syracuse University scholastic foci q clinic will be held Saturday .. y-ember 4, start in g - a t 10 a.m. and running throughout the -day-with-every team'in-rihe Northern scholastic league invited as well as the Lake Placid gridiron squad. The idea of a scholastic clinic was suggested to R. In the afternoon, special movies on fundamentals Aviil be shown with ether films'that-wHl be available through coach Bay,- singer. He and members of his ^staff will give talks to the boys bn backfield and line play, defense, defensive tactics and a question jteriod will be included to give the assembled high school players an opportunity to clarify any thing they have in mind from what they have observed during the day. - The program will be varied to meet the suggestions of the Nor thern league coaches who will be free to suggest ideas they feel will do most to aid the league as well as the players who will be in attendance. Coach Baysinger will make every effort to include their suggestions in the program which will provide a day full of football for the boys who get to Paul Smith's. ----------------------------------- Arrangements have been com pleted for those who are unable to get home to attend a luncheon in Saranac Lake where the play ers will be able to get together during the lunch period and then return to Paul Smith’s fdr the af- | ternoon session which will get I under way at 1:30 and end late > In the afternoon. Of interest to t%he Lake Placid contingent will be seeing Lake Placid’s own representative on the Syracuse varsity squad in ac tion. Henry Ge l leg is going great guns in the backfield and while light, he is showing plenty of speed and ability to fit in very nicely with coach Baysinger’s at tack as set up for this year. Gelles appears to be plenty last, can cut? has fine coordination and handles the ball very well and may go places with Syracuse this fall on the basis cf his showing to date in the f ir s t two workouts. Rain will not alter the program since the morning session will be conducted in the gym if condi tions prevent working on the field. The afternoon session will also be conducted^*, regardless of any—eonditidhs that might affect using the field. ers m Twin 3-0; l - l ADIRONDACK Daily EN T E R P R ISE P A U f i F Q U K WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 1, 1948 ALTAMONT AND AUSABLE FORKS PLAY TO 2-2 TIE L A K E P L A C ID , S e p t. 1 — F o l lowing a week a n d a h a l f of rest, M a t t C l a r k g o t h is A ltam o n t j D a ir y m e n b a c k in actio n a g a in s t ( A u S a b le F o r k s and th e re s t \\ as : a p p a r e n t l y w h a t D ick, th e F o r k s ; h u r l e r , also needed.
