Essex and Franklin County district have returned to duty as of April 1st, according to C. J. Yops, district ranger a: Saranac Lake. Some of these observers are al ready a t their mountain stations. The rem ainder will be assigned to their stations as soon as wea th e r conditions demand. There are eighteen mountain stations in this district, said District Ranger Yops. The mountains and their ob servers are as follows: Belfrey Mountain, A. T. B urhart; White- faoe Mountain, Hiram Denton; St. Regis Mountain, Bert Ducatt; H u rricane Mountain, Emmett Fuller; DeBar Mountain, John Garland; Makomis Mountain, Ar thur Greenough; Azure Mountain E a rl Johnston; Adams Moun tain, Edward Morarity; Palmer Hill, William Nolan. Vanderwhacker John O’Donnell; Lyon Mountain, Robert Seney; Pok-O-Moonshine Mountain, Russell Smith; Boreas Mountain, Basil H. Stowall; Pha raoh M ountain,'John H. Stowell; Goodenow W alter West; Loon Lake Mountain, un assigned; Morris Mountain, un assigned; Ampersand Mountain, unassigned. All are veterans of , from one to seventeen years of service at these mountain locations. As stat ed by Mr. Yops, the main duties of these observers consist of w at ching for smoke from their tovt. er positions on top of the moun tains, to report positions of smokes sighted to the nearest forest ranger of fire warden, to m aintain the tower, cabin, trail, telephone line and other facilities in the best of condition, and to reply to inquiries of visitors who visit these far-away posts. Besides the observers as listed and Mr. Yops, the forest fire con trol staff for this district consists of twenty-two rangers and about LAKE PLACID, April 8—Mrs. .Elsie Davis of 8 Spring street was hostess recently at a party for her daughter, .Nancy, who celebrated her eighth birthday. The ran gers have stations in St. Regis Falls, Owls Head, Dannemora, Altona, Keeseville, Saranac, Au. Sable Elizabethtown, Keene, Schroon River, Lake Gol den, Chilsen, Schroon Lake, Olm- sjedville, Lake Placid, Saranac' Lake, Bloomingdale, TupperLake Olympic Bob Run, Shattuck, Clearing, Newcomb, and Aiden Lair. The forest fire control head quarters for this district is loca ted at Saranac Inn. A full day’s training and instruction session is scheduled for all personnel at that location on April 8. At this meeting the men will receive the latest instructions and advice be fore assignment to their stations for the spring fire season, said Mr. Yops. District Ranger Yops coutions everyone th a t within all fire towns of this district, an indivi dual must obtain a written per mit from his local ranger before setting a fire to dear land or to burn logs, brush, dry grass, or stumps. Fires can be reported by tele phone by calling the “Forest Ranger” in any of the locations listed, or by calling the district office — “Saranac Lake 698.” Mr. Yops states that the cooper ation of the public in reporting fires has always been excellent, and has been greatly appreciated by his bureau. SYRACUSE, April 8 UP)—' The Onondaga County Alcoholic Bev erage Control board is deadlock ed on a proposal to close bars and taverns at 1 a.m. Dr. Buettner, who opposes the proposal, said further investiga tion would be made. LOTTERY LEADS NORTH UTICA, April 8 (£>)— Four men were arrested last night and early today in connection with lottery investigation underway for three weeks, police reported. More than 125,000 lottery tick ets were seized in Utica and nearby Rome. The lottery’s operations exten ded through central and into northern New York, police said. An 83-car freight train, power ed by three 1,500-horsepower diesel units, hauled a load of 2,- 600 tons yesterday through the Adirondack Mountains in the op- Alma Cleveland To Wed Herbert Wild LAKE PLACID, April 8—Mr, and Mrs. Grover Cleveland of Lake Placid have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Alma Cleveland, to Herbert Wild, son of Mrs. Bertha Wild of Syracuse. Miss Cleveland studies at Taylor university and is now training in the home economics depart ment at Plattsburg State Teach ers college. Mr. Wild is attending Syracuse university where he is studying electrical engineering. He served during World W ar II with the Navy. No date has been set for the wedding. Of approximately 422,000 pro ducing oil wells in the United States, only about 4,900 produce oil without pumping.
