LAKE PLACID NEWS, FRIDAY, JANUARY 1, 1926 — PAGE TWO ESSEX COUNTY OPPORTUNITIES Reprinted from Essex County Farm Bureau News The average human being in some way spends his few short years on earxh in search of happi- ness, however, most people in the pursuit of happiness must make a livelihood and put something away for the rainy days. In addition, to the educational and social, the material opportunities of Essex county are many. Essex county is primarily a dairy county. She was also the first\ modified county in New York State. Many towns in other coun- ties are losing as high as 50 per cent reactors. This means that there is going to be a constant demand during the next 10 to 15 years for tested cattle. Being a cream producing coun- ty we have plenty of skim milk, the prime essential in starting and growing calves to the well grown type the market demands. Are pure bred sires used as much as they should be ? The ar- gument arises that some pure breds are not as good as some grades, but why? It's not the fault of the pure bred and in most cases the good grade is the result of the pure bred sire. A good pure bred sire with plenty of red in his pedigree will, in most cases, in- sure calves with the inherited characteristics that buyers want, namely type and production. Along this line are the possi- bilities of oats, peas and barley. Ask the man who is growing them. He will tell you that their combi- nation is reducing his feed costs to the minimum. This mixture alone is a very good grain for the growing animal and • when mixed with high protein feed makes an excellent ration for the milking cow. It has been thoroughly demon- strated that alfalfa can be grown successfully in Essex county. The man who is raising it has the ad- vantage over the man who isn't, both in the milk production and ir raising the young stock. More extended use of the Cow Testing Association or Cow Test- ing Association methods will lo- cate the non-producers and board- ers, leaving the best to breed from. Cows with Cow Testing Associa- tion records find a ready sale. The present year has demon- strated the value of good seed potatoes. Maintaining good seed by selection and careful growth means a harvest in good years i the past. &H communities. Every owe realizes its importance. Reforest- ing the waste lands means an added beauty and an added value to the farm. Poultry also has its possibilities, of which many people are becom- ing aware. Along conservative lines poultry should provide an ex- tra source of dfividend. Essex county has a large sum- mer tourist trade. Folks are of- ten careless about the a*>nearances of the roadsides and public places. It is a common, sight to see the roadsides cluttered with rubbish, boxes ar»d flying papers. Some one has suggested* that a County Clean Up Campaign be inaugur- ated. Also that some provision be made for garbage cans along highways. Along this line are the possibilities of septic tanks and water systems for those interested in summer tourist trade. Many men have found sheep to be profitable property during the past three years. While wool and mutton has possibly reached the peak in price and may be slipping, year in and year out, the sheep men will be fairly prosperous. Along with these possibilities is the constant increase in popuia tion of our cities and the gradual decrease in the number of farms. The poorer farms are being aban- doned. There will come a time, in the not distant future, when the demand for good farms will equal or exceed the supply. There is every reason to expect genera] agricultural prosperity in from three to ten years hence. Our summary, these are some of the opportunities that are be- fore Essex county in an agricul- tural way. The increasing de- mand for tested cattle asks for the best that can be grown. Pure bred sires will better the stock. More home grown feed will re- duce the costs as will alfalfa and better seed. Cow Testing Associations and Cow Testing Association methods nrovide a business means of spot- ting the boarders and providing a foundation for higher production. Conservative sheep men are safe in moderately breeding up their flocks. Good potatoes have their place m the scheme- of things. Refor- estation has a worthy place in every community. Poultry may become an added source of income. A County Clean Up Campaign and more general use of water and sewage disposal systems may as- sist in the summer tourist trade. With the better future in pros- pect Essex county farmers have every reason to \carry on.\ CHILDREN SHOULD BE OUTOF DOORS Clothe Youngsters Sensibly and Let Them Ron in Winter as in Summer—Is Health Treatment \Mushrooms may be improved by being grown under glass; it works the other way around with chil- dren,\ The state college of economics at Ithaca advises ing children outdoors a£ amok, $o *ive them the greatest __ tumty t© develop as they should. 'The ultra-viol«t ra» of sun- light, necessary for prAer growth and bone formation, « filtered out by ordinary windw glass,\ says the college. \A kind of glass is made which will l<bt in these rays but at present it is too ex- pensibe to be practical. Children can get just as great an amount of this kind of light by outdoor play part of each day, unless the weather is extremely bad. \Proper clothing will protect a child from the winter cold but parents should not load their children with so much heavy clothing that their movements are hampered. Two or three layers sof light or medium weight underwear a woolen dress or suit, preferably with bloomers, and a well-fitting warm coat and some head cover- ing will probably be needed for ordinary cold days. Warm stock- ings and stout shoes with rubbers or overshoes when the ground is damp will be sufficient for the milder days. Colder weather may demand leggings and a sweater under the coat but the outer gar- ments should be regulated accord- ing to the weather. \Properly clad children may play , outdoors and get the full benefit! of sunlight, fresh air, and exer- cise all winter long. If they do they are much less likely to need doctoring in the spring to bring back the color to their cheeks.\ Report of Health and Safety Com. of C. of C. Your Committee on Health and Safety reports as follows: During the past summer it c£me to the attention of the Chamber of Commerce that the village water supply in the reservoir on Mt Whitney is not adequtaely pro- tected against pollution. The mat- ter was brought to the attention of the Board of Health and this Board promptly investigated and recommended to the Village Board that signs be placed to indicate that this reservoir contains the village water supply and that no- tice be posted forbidding fishing, bathing or otherwise polluting the water. The Board of Health also recommended that a substantial fence be erected to prevent free access to the reservoir. While the Committee on Health and Safety had nothing to do as a committee with a very import- ant matter of safety, we deem it pertinent to call attention to the support of the Chamber of Com- merce given the Village Fire De- partment in securing for this com- munity the additional fire fighting equipment. SARANAC LAKE Phones on Farms Automobiles outnumber tele- phones almost two to one on farms in New York, according to a recent farm survey. There are 178,019 farmer-owned automobiles in New York, com- pared with 91,973 farm-operated telephones, the report shows. For the United States there are 1,322,- ;>07 more automobiles on farms than there are telephones. The totals are: 3,821,065 farm cars and 2,498,493 farm telephones. There is an average ot one farm telephone to every 11.9 farm peo- ple in America, compared with one farm car to every 8,1 farm people. Preponderance of automobiles over telephones on farms, the bul- letin points out, is due tc the fact that automobiles have become an indispensable part of the average farm equipment. Cars are used for all sorts of farm labor, includ- ing hauling, furnishing power for machinery, and doing farm er- rands. The farms now enjoy most of the conveniences that were formerly exclusive to the city r but automobiles are regarded as the most important, for the survey showed that many farms reported automobiles where the farm houso had no bath tub, running water or <?leetric light. Total farms in Mew York are med at 198,195 in th* bulletin. The average value per farm ia tfie state is reckoned at f 9,879. r May the blessedness of the Holiday Spirit abide with you and the glorious promise of a bounteous New Year be given unto you* SILK SHOP Fuji Building MAIN ST./ LAKE PLACID Phone 48$ Alfred's Ice King Recognized Leadershi] The common misuse of its name bears witness to Speed Wagon's leadership* In numbers, in capacity or horsepower per dollar invested, and i$ performance records it has no dose rivals* A demonstration in your own business will be arranged on request. \ THE *t A.
