We live in a SQQielty \• where each of us works and hopefully receives a just wage for our labors. This is- true whether we are lower-level laborers or the Trumps of the World. A housing developer is also justified to make a just wage for his labors. To expect that a developer should absorb the costs of the water infrastructure for Brandle Meadows is ludi- crous thinking; If one were having a house built, would the builder be expected to pay for the garage? I think not. The generosity of Mr. Thomas is a recorded fact and need not be mentioned further. I am most concerned, how- ever, by the myths which seem to be floating all over Altamont. One such myth suggests that the only reason the village of Alta- mont had to seek additional water is because of the Brandle Meadows development. Nothing can be further from the truth. Altamont began searching for additional water many years ago^en ; befor,e this \project was proposed; \' v ^ASf^ne.t'tti^h is that the village residents have paid for ,tfe\ih^asti^c'tu^e qi lifee current tially trite, allof New York.State taxpayers paid :for. the infra- structure of Main ..Street arid Maple, Avenue. The infrastruc- ture of the remainder of the village was paid for generations ago by the residents who developedihe system. The cur- rent users* both inside and out- side the village, have continued to maintain the infrastructure through their water-\usage charges. Another myth is that the water users from outside the village do not pay their fair .share of the costs of the water system- How- ever, the great equalizer is the double-the-water-rate charge which outside residents must pay. I am concerned about divisive- ness among our community which this issue seems to be causing. I hope we can settle the issue without further rancor and move on. Joseph A, Giambo Altamont Volunteers know what community and commitment mean To the Editor: I have two sons, Sean and P.J., whp are Voorheesville junior .firefighters.. I've been asked, why do. we allow them to do it? Some have asked do they want to pursue firefighting as a career. I reply, \No they want to volunteer for the community.\ I felt like saying, but I didn't, \Why don't you throw away the Play Stations, Nintendos, and X Boxes, etc. and get involved in important community commit- ments?\ Let's face it; both is our future. It appears nowadays some have lost track of what com- munity and commitment mean. It is not a fancy house, fancy car, or lavish vacations — it is what volunteers do: serve and protect. We all heard of the heroes of Sept. 11. Well, they were heroes! However, these volunteers are heroes that face the same dilem- ma each and every time the alarm goes off. My wife and I asked our- selves: Are we bringing up our kids right? Should we allow them into a situation that in- stincts tell you to run from? Well, I have been totally im- pressed with the junior program. I saw the values, it instilled in the son of a family friend that went through the program in Alta- mont. I am very lucky that Joe Sapi- enza [Voorheesville's athletic director] helped instill in my young men commitment, cour- age, and training. All these young men give a great com- mitment to meetings, training, and classes. Wow! To think all these mem- bers give their time for free. Now that I have praised all the officers, past and present, I do have an ax to grind with Chief Stone. My sons watch the weather forecasts and ask Mr. Young at Voorheesville's high school what the weather is going to be. They lay out the appropriate clothing, to jump into in a second for a call. Chief Stone, my concern in them responding to a call is they are not properly trained how to get through their rooms in the dark without falling. Chief Stone, I will volunteer my home for a drill for you and your officers to show them how to clean their rooms. Chief Stone and all firefighters at Voorheesville, thank you for taking all the junior firefighters under your wings. God bless you.
