James Patterson has a new courtroom and hospital thriller out, 5th Horseman, which will pull you toward the apocalypse with its page-turning plot (there are 139 chapters) as the Wo- men's Murder Club investigates suspicious deaths at the hospital. Guilderland By Barbara Nichols Randall Margaret Garrett has been named Interim Assistant Director at the Guilderland Pub- lic Library beginning March 1. Ms. Garrett, celebrating her 20th year with the library, is well-known in the community as the head of Adult Services. I am delighted that Margaret is wil- ling to accept the challenge to serve as Assistant Director and I look forward to working with her during this time of transition. Margaret's professionalism and in-depth knowledge of Guilder- land helps the library on a daily basis. Medicare Part D On March 1, from 10 a.m. to noon, experts from the Albany County Department for the Aging's Health Insurance Infor- mation and Counseling Assist- ance will present a two-hour program on the basic facts about Medicare Part D. Information about how the program works with EPIC and eligibility for premium payments will be dis- cussed. . TAC meets Teen Advisory Committee 1.0 (for grades six through eight) will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, Mar^ch 1, from 7 to 8 p.m. Book sale On Friday, Feb. 24, from noon to 6 p.m., there will be a Children's Book Bale, featuring used books for ages eight to 12. They are perfect for fun reading or even book reports. Living healthy with chronic conditions If you, or someone you care for, has heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, or another chronic disease, you will be interested in attending the six- part series at the library. The sessions begin on Feb. 24 and will continue for six weeks from 2 to 4 p.m. each Friday. The series, geared toward exploring new ways to manage symptoms, is funded by the New York State Department of Health. The program is a re- search project conducted by the Elder Network of the Capital Region in the School of Social Welfare at the University at Albany, and based on a well- known program designed and tested by the Patient Education Research Center at Stanford University. Participants will receive free materials (workbook and relaxa- tion tape) and instruction on self- help techniques for relaxation, nutrition, exercise, fatigue, and symptom management, and they should plan to attend all six classes. Tax time Through April 17, the all- volunteer American Association of Retired Persons Taxaide Program will be at the library to provide free tax preparation and e-filing. This service is provided for taxpayers with low and moderate incomes for their personal federal and New York State tax return. Call the library's Adult Ser- vices desk at 456-2400, ext. 7, to schedule an appointment. Ap- pointments are for Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and for Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Last year's return, as well as all forms, W-2's, and 1099's for 2005 are needed at the time of preparation.
