ECOWATER • The Enterprise — Amy Pokorny Blood drive: The Hilltowns rallied last Thursday to donate blood in support of East Berne resident Ann Ecker. Donating at left is Alan Zuk, at right is Mary Pat Bichteman, a retired Berne elementary teacher, and in the back is Cindy Quay. Excellent turnout at blood drive for Ecker To the Editor: A blood drive was held on Thursday, Sept. 30, a t the Knox Reformed Church in support of Ann Ecker, a resident of East Berne who has been diagnosed with leukemia. Several members of the Ecker family, and friends, including Chuck Conklin, were in attendance, serving refresh- ments at the canteen table and assisting as needed. Participants who donated blood also signed cards, offering personal words of encouragement for Ann. Matt Ecker, Ann's husband, said, \Her prognosis is good, and she will greatly appreciate the many donors who came out and the many thoughtful cards they signed.\ He said, \The chemo- therapy treatments have been difficult for her, and she con- tinues to receive regular blood transfusions, especially plate- lets.\ The goal for the drive was set for 45 pints, which was ex- ceeded, as 63 donors registered at the door. This was an excel- lent turnout for the Hilltowns area, and there were a high number of first-time donors. This was the second drive organized on behalf of Ann, as her family organized a drive that was held in Delmar in August thai collected 28 pints. Dollar $avers First-time donor Penny Shaw from Berne said, \I heard about the drive through Carol King, a friend and teacher at Berne- Knox-Westerlo High School, who told me that this drive was being held for Ann.\ She said, \I .always wanted to donate blood and I am donating in honor of my daughter, Heather Huth, a cancer survivor, and my good friend Chuck Conklin, in his current strong fight with can- cer.\ One of the representatives for the Red Cross was at the drive educating donors about apher- esis, which is a special process for donating platelets that is done at the Red Cross offices on Everett Road in Colonie. Inter- ested donors can call 1-800-545- 4086 for more information, or to make an appointment to donate platelets. A donation jar was set out to collect money for Anthony Hill, a student at Berne-Knox- Westerlo High School who is also battling Hodgkin's lymph- oma. To the Editor: In mid-May of this year, I was diagnosed with acute myelocytic leukemia. It was a frightening event for me and my family, but the extent of support shown by friends, co-workers, neighbors, our children's schoolmates, and even strangers to us up here in the Hilltowns was overwhelm- ing. People offered their prayers, brought food, collected money, and even volunteered to help with household chores. I have spent countless weeks in the hospital and my family has been able to visit me there each day because of all the help from these very thoughtful and gener- ous people. On Thursday, Sept. 30, a blood drive was held in the Knox Reformed Church in support of me. Once again, the response was overwhelming. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of the donors, volunteers, and well- wishers. I feel truly blessed to live in the Hilltowns among these wonderful people. Ann Ecker East Berne Thanks for tourney support To the Editor: We would like to thank all the people who made the Second Annual Heather Conklin Huth Golf Tournament a huge suc- cess. This thank-you goes to all who played golf (over 50 players), all who helped with donations and bake sales at Berne-Knox- Westerlo, and all who cooked food for us a t the tourney. We also thank all who made donations of prizes: Hannay Hose Reel, Knox Country Store, Wright's Delites, Dad's Dog Food, Greg Speck, Sunny Hill Golf Course, Hiawatha Golf Course, Ketchum's General Store, 20 Mall Price Chopper, and the Old Berne Mill. This year's proceeds will go to the Anthony Hill Family to aid them as Anthony continues to battle lymphoma. Thank you and may God Bless each of you in a special way for caring and sharing and for whatever you did to help in this event. John Conklin Barry Udell Tourney organizers
