18 The AUamottt Enterprise — Thursday, November 3,1983 warn New Scotland Centennial Celebration For Presbyterian Church Bell The public is invited to join the congregation of the New Scotland Presbyterian Church in a special service Sunday at 11 a.m., which will commemorate the 100th year of service of its church bell. The bell was cast in 1883 by the Meneely Bell Co. of Troy, a major manufacturer of cast bells in the early days of America. A coffee hour will follow the service which will feature the Willett Bell Choir, directed by Helen Henshaw, of the First Presbyterian Church of Albany. All who attend are invited to bring a small bell of their own to ring during a special part of the service. The Meneely bell has been in continuous service in New Scotland since it was first installed. Rev. Gregory J. Pike, pastor, explains that an electronic carillon, install- ed several years ago, is played daily but that the manually- } ALS • BARBER Jg? • SHOP ^a • AL CAPPETTI, Prop. 34 MAIN STREET operated church bell is used for the call-to-worship each Sunday as it has beenfor 100 years. Current bell ringers for the church, Frederick Widmann and Samuel Youmans, both of New Scotland, will perform extra duty as part of the special service. The commemorative service is a project of the church historical commission which has been form- ed to plan for the church's bicentennial celebration in three years. The New Scotland Presbyterian Church was founded in 1787, making it the oldest Presbyterian church in the region surrounding the City of Albany. Members of the Historical Commission are Mar- garet Gott and Florine Moran of Voorheesville and Dorothy Wid- mann and Kathryn Youmans of New Scotland.
