The Altamont Enterprise — Thursday, November 3, 1983 11 Polltloa! Advertisement Political Advertisement Polltloal Advertisement 'Political Advertisement Political Advertisement TO THE VOTERS OF THE 31st LEG8SLATSVE DISTRICT A REBUTTAL Thank you, Paul, for your kind endorsement of my abilities as a lawyer and family person in your \open letter\ of October 27, last. 1. PURCHASE OF 112 STATE STREET and 28 HOWARD STREET - Because of the state takeover of the Court system, it was imperative that the County provide a working place for its employees. The cost to the taxpayer to purchase land in downtown Albany and build a new facility would be absolutely prohibitive. The intelligent approach was to purcahse an older existing structure and rehabilitate it. At no time did the minority step forward with a viable alternative. When the minority sought to reconsider the purchase, I voted with the minority to bring it back on the floor for debate. 2. ROAD BOND RESOLUTION — To attempt to prevent repairs to our highway system is not only irresponsible but dangerous to our citizens • all our citizens - whether they live in Albany and travel to Guilderland or live in Gyilderiand and travel to Albany. Your party's parochial and divisive approach on this issue is most distress- ing. As a lawyer, Paul, you should know that there is clear statutory authority for bonding roads which connect to county roads, and the voters should remember that your lawsuit was dismissed in Supreme Court. Now, Paul, let us turn to the issue of independence. COUNTY LEGISLATURE \The Albany County Legislature is likely to remain center stage, in the hot light of pubiic importance, over the next few years The questions of the 1980's are endless. Few of the legislators are outstanding, though two seem excellent choices. In the 31st District, we find an unusual phenomenon — a Democrat who not only owes nothing to Corning, but crosses him frequently. THOMAS CALLAGHAN, a tough-minded independent elected from usually Republican Guilderland, should be sent back to the legislature to continue his fight against Coming's creeping influence in the suburbs ... and HAS PROVEN UNAFRAID to raise vital questions the machine men would rather leave unspoken.\ KNICKERBOCKER NEWS, Editorial 10/30/79 BUILD LIVES OR JAILS? \Thomas A. Callaghan, a Guiideriand Democrat who Joined his Republican colleagues on the County Legislature to help defeat the bond, has wisely suggested a 30-day \cooling off\ period, during which legislators could study the proposed expansion and suggest possible alternatives.\ KNICKERBOCKER NEWS, Editorial 7/19/83 Paul, I'm afraid the facts speak for themselves; they clearly demonstrate my PROVEN RECORD of independence, a record I am very proud of and one I will continue to uphold. Warm personal regards, ^ / zfyn - Thomas A. Callaghan Albany County Legislator For Guilderland and Altamont P.S. I am also proud of my long association with Tom Whaien. He's doing a super job, don't you think? He's balanced the budget and is putting contracts out to bid. The press and public seem favorably impressed. And while I am on the subject of budgets, wasn't it terrific that Albany County was able to reduce taxes 5 out of the last 6 years? Have a nice day, Paul. 9)
