The AtamtOHt EiUmprise — Thursday, October 27,1983 PoHltcal Advwtliwnant Political Advertisement Political Advertisement Political Advertisement Political Advertlwment r \ TO THE VOTERS OF THE 31st LEGISLATIVE DISTRICT AN OPEN LETTER As volunteer counsel to the Albany County Legislature's Republican minority for the past four years, I have had an opportunity to observe the operation of the Albany County Legislature and its effects on the taxpayers of the Town of Guilderland. Recently we have read of the abuses in purchasing practices conducted by the County Democrat majority and in the past have read about similar abuses practiced by the Democrat machine in the City of Albany. THERE HAS BEEN A TENDENCY BY THE SUBURBAN RESIDENT TO IGNORE CITY PURCHASING ABUSES BY TAKING THE POSITION THAT SUCH ABUSES DO NOT AFFECT THE SUBURBAN TAXPAYER. IN POINT OF FACT, HOWEVER, THE SUBURBAN TAXPAYER HAS BEEN PICKING UP THE COST OF THESE ABUSES! HOW? EVERY TIME THE CITY BUDGET HAS BEEN PUSHED INTO A DEFICIT BY THESE PRACTICES, THE DEMOCRAT CONTROLLED COUNTY LEGISLATURE HAS COME TO THE RESCUE WITH COUNTY TAX DOLLARS. SPECIFICS? FOR EXAMPLE: 1. Resolution 176, July 14,1980 — 112 State Street and 28 Howard Street are purchased from the City of Albany for 4.25 million dollars. This purchase price was not only in excess of one of the appraisals secured by the County, but 28 Howard Street is already partially condemned. Democrat Majority Leader Richard Meyers has a ten-year lease in this building for his law office paying about ONE-FIFTH of the fair rental for this space. Other leading Democrats have similar rental agreements at YOUR EXPENSE. 2. Resolution 67, March 14,1983 — the Democrats passed the 6.8 million dollar bond resolution with 2.3 million dollars earmarked for CITY ROADS. Many county roads in need of repair have been left off this bond issue. The Republican minority has challenged this resolution in Court to attempt to block this suburban bailout of the City of Albany. YOUR INCUMBENT LEGISLATOR, MR. CALLAGHAN, VOTED IN FAVOR OF ALL OF THE ABOVE RESOLTUIONS. Mr. Callaghan has advertised himself in this newspaper as being an able lawyer, fine family man and independent legislator. Mr. Callaghan is truly a more than able lawyer, and is certainly a fine family man. Mr. Callaghan is clearly not the independent legislator he advertises himself to be. Is it a coincidence he is a law partner with the Mayor of the City of Albany? DAVE MUELLER WILL VOTE AGAINST ANYMORE BAILOUTS OF THE CITY DEMOCRATS. HE WILL TRULY TRY TO GIVE THE VOTERS OF GUILDERLAND AND ALIA MONT A FAIR SHARE ' 1-2
