THE RAVEN. 8omo Facts and riuioloa About tlio Alleged Bird of 111 Omen. The raven has ovor been reokonotl as a bird at ill omen; boing said t o (orobodo death' and carry contagion. The former Idea is beliovod to have arisen from tho faot that thoy follow armies, expecting to find bodies upon whloli to feod. The lattor notion is a mere offshoot of th e foriuor, it being tho rule that pestilence follows war and sluj-s as relentlessly as th o sword. I n Marlowo's poem outitlod \The Jew of Malta,\ I find the following fouriine al- lusion to the \ill boding\ raven: Liko the sad presaging raven that holds l'ho sick man's ])a.-.»port in hor hollow beak And in the shadow of tho silent night Doth shako contagion from her sablo wing. Joyianus Pontanus tells the story of n grent battle botweon ravens and kites whjoh was fought in the forest near Bono- vontuni th o day boforo the bloody engage- ment between human combatants took placo on the same ground. \The skirmish botweon tho birds,\ ho says, \prognosti- cated the battle and was held as boing prophetic.'' Nicetas speakB of a battlo be- tweon crows and rayons as presaging tho interruption of tho Soythian invasion o£ Thraco. He also tolls us that his frlond, a Mr. Draper, in middlo ago and good health, was warned of his speedy death by two ravons flying into hi s chamber win- dow. The classical aocount says that Cio- oro was forewarned of approaching death \by the fluttering of ravons.'' Maoauley goes furthor, declaring on the evidence of an old iogond that ravens en- tered the groat orator's room and pulled tho covers off his bod on the very day of hismurdos. Tho\Athenian Oracle\ (pago 476 of tho supplomout volume) declares that when ravons forsake- tho woods wo may look, for famluo and pestiieuoo, be- cause \ravens bear the character of Sat- urn,' the author of tho above uamedcalam- itios, and have a vory early perception ot tlio bad disposition of that planot.\ In Maoauley's \History of St. Kilda,\ pago 174, there is a n allusion to the wonderful foresight of ravens, He says: \Of all in- spired birds, ravons were accounted the most prophetical. According to the lan- guago of that district (St. Kilda), 'to have tho foresight of a raven' is t o this day a provorbiol expression,\—St. Louis Ke- Duhlic Wliore Ho Drow tli© TAno. Judge W . W. Walling, who had been lolding court out in tlio late Judgo Marr's >ld district midor a special appointment 5y tho governor, told a characteristic story if Marr. Tlio latter thouyh a sticker for ihe dignity of tho bouch, was a great pipe imokor and allowed tlio attorneys the jrivilcgo of smubing in court. On ona oc- msion ho was trying a murder case at Dnrrizo Springs, in which thero was much mppresaed uxci turnout and so much had Icollng that i t was foarod troublo might )roak out at any moment. Lato one after- loon, whilo tho opposing counsel were irguing the case and the iVolings of the ipeotators wore wrought up to tlio highest )itoh, a solid uldiiiiii-u fitting just under ihe judge's stand deliberately filled his >ipo, and with a graceful sweep of his inn drew th e parlor match aoross his onus pnnts leg in suoh a fashion as to ight it with a loud, sharp crack. Tho murt and jury wore started, and ovnyLuUy ookod around in a startled mannor, as if ixpocting a general fusillade to follow, vhoroupon Marr quickly apprehended tho lituation and rebuked the pipe smoker ibout ns follows: \ Gentlemen, tho court tolerates smok- ng in the courtroom. In faot, tho court imokos itself, but it must draw tlio lino at pntlemen lighting their pipeB with their ix shooters.\—Galveston {(owa. In a Tight Place. I recollect that at the dress rehearsal of \Hamlet\ M. Jlounet-Sully was late. The stage was waiting. I sent to have him summoned, by the call boy. He re- turned inamoment and told ine that M. Mounet-Sully could not come down from his dressing room then because his cos- tume was not quite ready. \Whatl I t •was finished a week ago, that costume. It was tried o n and worn. It i s com- plete and perfect.\ Yes,' th e costume was complete, but under his doublet W. Mouhet-Sully wore braces, and a t the last moment he had considered that he must have black ones—mourning braces —because Hamlet was dressed from head to foot in the \trappings and the suits of woe. Those lower strata of costume had annoyed him. \The public would not see them, but I should see them.\ This was not the auto-sugges- tion of Talma, but the sentiment comes from the same need—the need for the artist to believe himself the character he playB, the hero he represents.—Jules CVirette in North American Review. Tender Foot- Summer pedestrians suffer from ten- der feet to a great extent, and the trou- ble is generally attributed to th e shoes and the heat. Wide toed shoes are ob- tained, but after every long walk the feet are sore, and several days are re- quired to heal them. To prevent this and to harden the feet for long walks they should be soaked in a tub of water heated as much as the flesh will endure. To every half pailful of this hot water add a pieoe of nitrate of potassium about the size of a small walnut. This can be obtained a t any drug store. The feet should be treated to this bath about twice a week, but if considerable walk- ing is done and the feet continue sore, the bathing should be more frequent, \Women as well a s men will find this useful in hot weather, and even the pro- fessional tramp would find relief from his pains in this way,—Yankee Blade. His Mind Unburdened. He had a worried look on his face as he stepped into the busy man's office. \Excuse me,\ he said, \but from your appearance you are on intelligent man, and I take it for granted that you have read 'Catherine and Petruohio' or seen i t per formed on the stage.\ \I have seen it.\ \No doubt you are also acquainted with Baron Munchausen?\ \Yes.\ \Do you\—and the visitor fixed hia eye earnestly upon the other man's face—\do you know the difference between them?\ \Of course I do,\ answered the victim as his fingers nervously clasped a heavy glass paperweight. \But do you see the same difference that I see?\ \I—I don't know about that.\ \Well here it is: One is the 'Taming of the Shrew,' and the other is the shaming of the true.\ His drawn features relaxed.
