EDDITTOB—DBBR SuK.—I've seed «uthen lately in your Wattertown papers as sot me a thiukin. As the western fokes say, put rne sortur sniellen, raound. But I spbse I ort to fust intertfoose myself. My name is sain Ollipod, great great :great grandson UY Doct Ollipod uf the anglish dramy and my great great grand- -Jna on mammys side waz Wack eyd Susan only dotter of the noted johnMllite Paul Try. He hailed from, sum part uvlngland and mined oyer the stage and fogged the awdiences iii Lundon some considderable UT a spell ago. Well I naturly tuck artef grandmas fokes so some sort uy peeken round and poppen in that is tur say ive shed my fust teeth and keep my ize pealed. I lire mosly on vittals and ware close some- times. I am distuntly related to the Mac •Cawber famaly and am lander watin for suthin to turn up in this rej an. Ime sur- ' vivin at the meetropolis trv Hendurson now. Ime 'bizzily follerin no biznessin ' periiculer as usual. And Fouler sedd when he looked ovur my hedd that I was remar- kably adopted to my bizness and advized me to turn pollytishun, but thar waz wun ti-nbble about that, I warnt natterly meen •enuf tursuckseed. Well Mr. Edditfcur as I obsarved abuv, I sead suthin in the Wat- tertown Re-Uiiion that sort uv stonished me bout farmer sauce ginerly and pertaturs * speshully, arter readin these facks I ob- served to sum frends thut I wos goiu to the new cittee to see these ere vecgitubble ellerphunts fur myself and they gist larfed lite in my face tod sead \ vardunt.\ (Th ats tother name fur green yu noo.) Well they gist walked me inter wun uv tharstoors— shades uv the lamented sam slick if I did- •ent see the beater uv all youve sead on these pints, then I hope to run fur Congress in yur deestrict and that I bleve is nigh about the toughest bizzness follered unless it may be tryin tar make pcllertishuns honest. Fugfc there wos a rale redd blood beet handsum as a pictur and smooth as a speech for votes. It ways 14 pounds. Seckundly thar wur three taturs that waye.df 2^0. 1 two pound ten, No. 2 two pound thirteen, No. 3 *my beluvid friends, war a tatur what wos a tatur, fur it wayed \three pounds two with the sacred soil (we Ht fur -and ar taxed fur) all washed off I ! but thar wos wun thing more thar that is a beater uv beats and is most as crooked -and holler as pollyticians. 'j he thing\ are a littul reddish two foot and tight inches long, 17 inches round and. ways five pounds and a half and Davis <& Simmons (the ledds of the pollytick here) say the. hole in it warnt wayed at that.— Fokes say you have sum curious holes round Wattertown includes rum holes, but the hole in this reddish beats you all holler. The hole begun to grow last March and in May it was over two foot high, then the reddish started and in Sept it had overtuc the hole and grew all round it so they wur pulled up together, but the hole twisted the reddish intra the shape of a veggitta- ble allergatur. Now if enylfoddy can beat this walknp and show your hand, yours truly, SAM OLLIPOD. >T. B. It is remarkably free from pollitti- cul fevers here fur the last of Oct, hopen these few brilliant lines will find you Mr. Ed. enjoyin the same blessin. —Oilman While, of Scott County, Iowa, damaged a girl to the extent of $5,000 by reiusing tofrnarry hi.\.' and she has asked a Judge to help her rollcct the money.— Some men don't app;-:,r to appreciate the sufferinc they entui! m a woman by de- clining to marry her, * hen asked. A man that will refuse t<i .v.-ant such a favor to •one of the fair :ws, J .ght to be made to p:iy $5,000. —A poor family in Chicpgo, not being able to provide swuMling clothes, wrap- ped up anew bornir,:ant in the Tribune. Of course the child was found dead soon after—an awful T,-sirring. This suggests th» propriety of keeping it away from •children and reading it with glove's on. — Colfax in a speech at South Bend, Ih- /linna, told the pvople that he was not fool- ing when he said he was going to retire from public life. That, that was the last thiii! he should he seen addressing a politi- cal meeting. Three rousing cheers for Colfax were giv.m. —A gentleman taking his morning walk on the Fitchburg Bailroad track, thought lie felt something touch him from behind. The coroner's inquest decided that it was a locomotive propelled by a train of freight cars, that brushed him off the track. —There is considerable in the papers about the \Prison Keform Congress\ that is in session somewhere. Bless you, pris- ons never can reform Congress, though it -would be a temporary relief to have it tried on some of the members. We nomi- nate Ben. Butler as an experiment. —A merchant at Leesburgh, Ky., tho't he saw a mighty big rat in his cellar so he fceri a charge of buckshot at it. Sad to say le killed a thousand dollar nigger, and just \before a charter election there, too. It •Was a narrow escape for the rats. • —It is said that Grant has a great affec- tion for some of the customs of the wild Indians. If he had adopted the Sioux cus- tom, of burying with a deceased member of the family all p*esents ever received, when ' Lis mare died he would have needed a grave-yard as big as the state of Delaware. -A Chicago clergyman advertised every- where that he lost his watch, which he carried in his pocket without a chain. A neighbor returned it, having found it in lis corn-beef barrel. The elder had been smelling in his neighbors beef-barrel, to see if the meat would keep. —At Middleville Conn., the Rev. Mr. Green has been arrested, not, however, for \ gro.ss immorality.\ All he did was to forge $30,000 while on a visit to Indiana. But the forgeries were on a member of an- other church, so he is not ceusured so much \by his flock. —A colored gentleman at Nashville, be- . jng refused admitance into the ladies car, wanted to carve the brakeman. This was mot permitted, owing to a revolver the Tbrakeman carried. The Republican Loyal League paid the African's funeral ex- penses, and charged the amount to the election expense fund. P.
